Harmony 231-232. Includes dictation, ear training, sight singing and key-
board harmony. Prerequisite: Mu.Th. 123-124. Class: 2 hours. Credit: 2
semester hours per course.
231-232-Advanced Harmony. Harmonization of melodies, use of non-
harmonic tones secondary and altered sevenths, borrowed tones, and modu-
lation. Analysis of harmonic and structural practices of several periods.
Prerequisite: Mu. Th. 121-122. Class: 3 hours. Credit: 3 semester hours per
course.
Music Education
121-122-Woodwinds Class. A study of the flute, oboe, clarinet and
bassoon. Practical experience is offered in the development of embouchure,
tone production, correct breathing and articulation. Study of instrument
care, reeds and teaching materials. Class: 2 hours. Credit: 2 semester hours
per course.
131-Elements of Music. A study of scales, chords, music terminology,
signatures, intervals, sight singing and rhythms. Designed to prepare
students for more advanced study in music theory, or to familiarize non-
music majors with the meaning of musical notation and the harmonic,
melodic and rhythmic structure of music. Not offered to students who have
completed Mu. Th. 131 or its equivalent. Class: 3 hours. Credit: 3 semes-
ter hours.
134-First Course in Music for Elementary Teachers. A general orien-
tation course to meet the needs of the classroom teacher in elementary
education. A basic course in the study of scales, chords, music terminology,
signatures, intervals, sight singing and rhythm. Also offered as Edu. 134.
Class: 3 hours. Credit: 3 semester hours.
221-222-Strings Class. Teaching methods and materials for violin,
viola, cello and string bass. Performance on all instruments, including one
and two octave scales and light ensemble studies. Class: 2 hours. Credit:
2 semester hours per course.
231-Music Methods and Materials for Elementary Grades. Presenta-
tion of rote songs; the child voice in singing, introduction of staff notation:
listenings; tonal and rhythmic problems. Prerequisite: 6 hours of Educa-
tion. Class: 3 hours. Credit: 3 semester hours.
232-Music Methods and Materials for Junior and Senior High. Pre-
sentation of Choral Music Literature. Detailed study of "General Music"
at the Junior and Senior High levels, and a discussion of problems and
techniques involved in High School music teaching. Prerequisite: 6 hours
in Education. Class: 3 hours. Credit: 3 semester hours.
323-324-Church Choir Literature and Techniques. The technique of
conducting, dictation, intonation, tone quality, balance, blend, phrasing,
style, attack and release, rhythm, tone color, and vowel formation as used
in the church choir. These aims are to be accomplished through the study
of a large repertoire of ensemble and solo material for all age church choir
groups. Class: 2 hours. Credit: 2 semester hours per course.
