Pedestrians Need
Better Brakes Is
Opinion Of Cress
CHICAGO, March 6—(P— Many
pedestrians need better brakes.
This opinion was expressed before
,a safety conference by G. E. Cress
of Mason City, la., who has made a
scientific study of pedestrans and
their reactions to danger.
"If a man is walking. at the rate
of four miles an hour,” he said, "and
a manhole suddenly opens at a dis-
tance of three fest in front of him,
he’ll probably fall in. Ninety-nine
out of a hundred would."
His muscles could stop him short,
he said, if they got the order from
his brain but after the brain has
told the legs to walk it takes too
long to countermand the order.
"The safety of a pedestrian," he
added, "depencs on three factors,
his rate of speed, the danger zone’s
extent and the reaction time. My
finding is that for a man walking |
four miles an hour, the danger zone
is six feet if his reaction time is
normal.”

HELD AT BW
BRADY, Texas, March 6—<Sp)—
The 19 calves exhibited in the sec-
ond annual McCulloch County 4-H
Club Livestock Show under the aus-
pices of the Brady Chamber of
Commerce here Thursday. won the
highest praise of John Burns, na-
tionally known livestock judge, who
urged that a bigger feeder program
be carried on in this section of Tex-
as.
“This section of Texas is second
to none in adaptability of soil and
climate to raise feed and livestock."
Mr. Burns declared, "and if the peo-
ple of this section will put these two
together into finished product, it is
bound to result in a handsome
profit." He complimented the
Brady Chamber of Commerce and
। County Agent Prewit for encourag-
ing this feeding program.
“I have never judged a better
1 group of 4-H club calves in all my
judging experience than this group
of Brady calves," Burns declared.
Burns is Secretary of the Texas
.Livestock Marketing Association and
has been judge at the Kansas City
Royal Livestock Show, the Fort
Worth Fat Stock Show, and a num-
iber of other national livestock
