air there were planes with air po-
' licemen, making a right of way for I
, the planes carrying the firemen and j
, tne fire apparatus.
It was just as it had been in the
days when policemen made auto-
mobiles get out of the way while
the tire engines dashed along.
! Of course, it would be even more
1 dangercus to bump into a fire plane
than into a fire engine down on the j
earth.
When they reached the place, the
fire had already been put out, but
the people were so grateful to the

very small air hotel where the fire
had been they found that Peggy had

, last game of checkers, and now they
; said good-by to the firemen and
went down to the earth in their
| plane
Suddenly the Little Black Clock i
had turned the time back and John
• found himself in a fire house such
as he had known', in his day and an
alarm had Just been sent in.
The Little Black Clock told John
he could ride with the firemen on
the hook and ladder truck and, even
though he had been flying up in
the air and going to tires of the
future, he felt he had never turned
a corner in his life as they did now.
i John watched the firemen as they
I climbed ladders, pulled people out
' of windows and carried them down
ladders, while one person jumped
