1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The community of Bridgeport, Texas, started from a
3 toll bridge crossing of the Trinity River for stagecoaches of the
4 Overland Mail Company, and the name "Bridgeport" was acquired from
5 the bridge that portaged the stream; and
6 WHEREAS, There is a national legislative initiative to create
7 a national Overland Mail Company trail from Tipton, Missouri, to
8 San Francisco, California, which will pass through Bridgeport,
9 Texas; and
10 WHEREAS, The city's first economy was based on the stagecoach
11 and wagon shipping activity through Bridgeport; and
12 WHEREAS, Bridgeport has celebrated its unique Butterfield
13 Stage Days for many years, and there is a long tradition in
14 Bridgeport of using a stagecoach in at least three events annually;
15 and16 WHEREAS, Bridgeport has its own Concord Stagecoach and keeps
17 it on public display; the city uses the stagecoach as a symbol and
18 an icon and plans events around its stagecoach heritage; and
19 WHEREAS, The Main Street program heritage and tourist efforts
20 in Bridgeport have been, and continue to be, centered around the
21 stagecoach theme; and
22 WHEREAS, Given Bridgeport's origins as a stagecoach crossing
23 and the continuing efforts of the city to preserve this picturesque
24 and symbolic part of its history, it is fitting that the historic1
