Dallas. July 24.—(Special.) — Esti-
mates of the damage done iu Dallas
city and county by the great rain
storm of yesterday and last night run
from 160,000 to $100,000. The latter
figures are likely to be the nearer ac-
curate. The losses to the municipality
in the items of streets and bridges in-
jured or swept away will total close to
125.060. Reports received by the board
of county commissioners today show
extensive damages in the country dis,
tricts. Commissioner Pippin received
a report of the washing out of a thirty-
foot bridge which spanned a small
creek on the Gaston road. The water
was never known before to get nigh
enough to touch the bridge. Mr. Pippin
has information that a number of
bridges in the Mountain Creek neigh-
borhood were washed out by the
heavy rain of a week or more ago. He
had not received any reports from that
seetion. today, but it is expected that
more damage was done by the rain of
yesterday.
Commissioner Cochran has received
reports of a number of small bridges
and culverts being washed out in his
district, esoeciMly in the northwest
portion of the county. The exact loca-
tion of these bridges which had been
destroyed are not known by Mr. Coch-
ran. hut he stated that he had received
reports sufficient to justify him in be-
lieving that much damage had been
done.
Reports from the eastern part of the
county are not of serious character.
Commissioner Bennett said that he had
not received any reports of bridges be-,
ing washed away in his district, but his’
roads suffered damage, the gravel be-
ing washed from the thoroughfares,
and in some places great gullys being
made in the roadways.
Commissioner Ferguson was not
about the courthouse, but it is expected
that damage was done in his precinct,
as the rain seemed to be as heavy south
of the city as it was here.
The commissioners admit that the
roads of Dallas county are in an ex-
tremely bad condition.
