New York, Dec. 14.—With the start
of the Hains trial at Flushing, L. I.,
today, a campaign for a cleaner press
has been inaugurated in New York
with the hope of inducing newspapers
to eliminate from their columns any-
thing that might be suggestive or of-
fensive. The move has been started by
an open letter of three prominent
men who declare that they have the
support of Archbishop Farley, Bishop
Greer, Jacob H. Schiff, the banker
and financier; Robert D. De Forest
and others. The do-operation of the
public is invited and while there is
no desire, it is said to censor the
news it is believed that a campaign
among proper lines would be effec-
tive.

Powerful Weapon to Be Tested by Uni-
ted Stntea Soldiers.
New York, Dec. 14.—Teats are soon
to be made by the United States army
at Manila of what is declared to be
the most deadly hand grenade ever
invented. Lieutenant William H. Mapes,
a member of the Thirty-third infantry,
is the inventor. The instrument dis-
charges no less than 403 bullets, thus
making a soldier more of a terror to
the enemy. The grenade looks very
much like A stick of dynamite and ia
nine inches long. Gun cotton is packed
in a cast iron pipe for one-third of the
length and a small can contains the
408 bullets. The whole contrivance is
light and can be carried with safety,
it is said.
When it explodes tho bullets are dis-
tributed so near the surface of the
ground that the men even lying down
can be reached. Ideutenant Mapes is
now in Manila with his regiment and
will personally take part in the ex-
periments with his invention.

Chicago, Dec. 14.—Rev. Dr. James
8. Stone, speaking yesterday to Lake

rich.
“Extravagance and self-indulgence.”
declared Mr. Stone, “are barriers as
mighty as those of poverty against the
noblest qualities of life. Hard indeed
is it for a rich man to enter into the
kingdom of God or Into the kingdom
of Intellectual life. Ignorance is not
confined to the haunts of the poor.
Oftentimes it is even more dense in
the homes of the rich, aye in spite of
the luxury, nay, because of the luxury.
‘Give me neither poverty nor riches.’

years since. They who have neither,

they are going to be anything either
