A SHORT DRIVE - - Cleveland area folks have found that a very rewarding
holiday trip that is relatively inexpensive is to Galveston and especially a
visit to the Bishop’s Palace, an ornate 19th Century structure in the Island
City. It is a treat especially for those who relish the old antique flavor that is
much of Galveston.
Name drawn was A. V. Smith
He won $25.00.

State forestry personnel are con-
cerned about the number of hunters
who will be in the woods during deer
season
According to Bruce Miles, acting
director of the Texas Forest Service,
large numbers of hunters in the woods
create potential problems for service
fire - fighting personnel, such as in the
Sam Houston Forest.
“While fire danger levels are not
extremely high, the combination of
drying vegetation and large numbers
of people in the woods will create a
very real hazard,” Miles said "The
forested areas are still suffering from
the drought this summer."
Chilly mornings may prompt
hunters to build campfires ana warm-
ing fires which if abandoned in the
excitement of the hunt, could spread
rapidly out of control. Smoking
materials carelessly disposed could
also start wildfires.
“Since the Texas Forest Service
crews are responsible for fighting
wildfires in the forest regions of East
Texas, anything that increases the
chance of a wildfire concerns us.”
Miles said.
“We hope hunters have a suc-
cessful hunt, but urge them to be
extremely careful with fire - - and
firearms.”
