By separate split votes Tuesday,
the Panola County Commissioners
Court appointed Buford H. Porter
as the new Precinct 2 Justice of the
Peace and approved $2,800 for the
DeBerry Community Center which
had been rejected last month.
Commissioners voted 3-1 to ap-
point Porter, a former county rood *
foreman in Precinct 2, as the new
JP to succeed 1.0. Nail.
He immediately was sworn in by
County Judge Ruff Wall to begin
duties as justice of the peace.
55ect0n 36 Nail recently resigned the JP
^'"*”0 Mumber 72 post to be appointed as county
commissioner for Precinct 2 in the
wake of the death of long-time
commissioner John Brooks.
And commissioners split 2-2 on
the DeBerry youth activity funds,
with commissioners Leonard Jones
and I O. Noil supporting it, and
commissioners Roland Davis and
Carl Hendrickson opposing it.
Judge Woll then cast the tie-
breaking vote in favor of the
request for the funds to help build
a fence for the ballpark and
playground which is used by
several hundred residents of the
eastern part of the county.
Jones' motion to approve the
funds last month died for lack of a
second and triggered angry reac-
tion from DeBerry Community Cen-
ter supporters.
Commissioners Davis, Hen-
drickson and the late Mr. Brooks
last month had said it was against
their policy to provide such funds
for youth activities which were not
in incorporated cities - although
there was no mention of such a
policy in county records, and
despite the fact DeBerry had
received a $2 800 allocation last
year
DeBerry spokesman Danny
Yates urged the commissioners
