Yarborough says a lot hinges on the outcome of
the Shelbyville Tatum game this weekend a* to how
he1* going to feel when it come* time for the Jockels
to take on the two district favorite*
Horrit Rating* pick* Shelbyville for number one
and Elysian Fields a distant second In the final
district standings with Tatum and Timpson following.
And Panola Newspapers sports Ctor Ted Loach
has placed Timpson on top. followed by Tatum.
Shelbyville Waskom and Beckville before allowing
tho 'Jackets a birth on the district predictions.
Yarborough says that Shelbyville traditionally
comes out tough in early season play, gradually
weakening In performance as the season wears thin.
Yarborough seems to be banking on that aspect of
things when he comes against the Harris Rating
favorite for the last bout of the year
But there's still Garrison to contend with first and
Yarborough always on* to consider first things first
says be what if may the Bulldogs aren't going to get
defeated by theory.
"It's going to take all the concentration defensive
effort and offensive potential we can muster to end
our district debut with a win ” said Yarborough "I
know from seeing the improvement in confidence
and effort over the past two games that we can take
Garrison but it isn't anybody's guarantee until the
final play Friday night."

Friday nights District 22AA opener between
Elysian Fields Yellowjackets (2-1) and Garrison
Bulldogs (I-I-1) is seen by head coach Guy Yar-
borough as |ust a decisive a game for his charges as
is the Tatum • Shelbyville match will be.
Because we've got to win this one to continue
with the footing we've gained through our last two
non-district win*." says Yarborough
The Jackets wreaked havoc on a field lull of
water and mud lost week to humble Karnack 35 0
before a sparse homecoming crowd,
Although favored In the ratings to top the Tribe by
at least 22 the Jackets exhibited better ball con
trol. overall than they have during dry weather.
The turnovers were high •• a* con be oxpected
when it rains during an entire gome •• but not in com
parison to what they've been during fair weather
bouts against Spring Hill (216) and New Diana (7.
12) where better control could have turned around
the first game results and vastly improved the point
difference in gome two
What had the most shine despite a 35 point of-
fensive effort by Elysian Fields last week was their
Orange Crush defense which forced 11 turnovers ..
seven interceptions and four fumbles lost ■ against
the Indians
By comparison the Jackets had only five turnovers
all fumbles lost And th* Jackets fumbled eight
times •• one a forgiveable event when defender
Johnny Turner (44) snagged a Karnack pass and
juggled it between one bare arm and another spot
ting a massive assembly of plaster cost and two inch
padding • in losing those
Garrison has had a time of things playing' loo
scoreless tie against Troup the team who inched
past Timpson 2-0 last Friday and dropping one to
Arp 26 0 two weeks ago
Th* Bulldogs finally came up with a score last
Friday as well as a win taking Huntington 32 12

And Elysian Fields wo» a little queasy in their first
outing at well with the 21-6 flouncing by a large and
agressive Panther Fock
Since then th* ‘Jackets have gon* into a two gam*
winning streak, taking a hard-fought win against
New Diana which wot not decided until the fourth
quarter. then going on to win with ease th*
homecoming bout with Karnack
Th* ‘Jackets have tcored 53 points thut far in th*
season while allowing th* opposition a total of 28
points. But the majority of those points com* from
defensive play handouts and resulting big plays at
the hand* of two-way’ers like Reggie Jones David
Henigan and Bobby Powell.
Turner ha* had his hand in the pi* as well with
decisive block* at crucial moments and the
previously mentioned interception
Henigan and Powell are quickly developing into a
possible pas* receiver threat that could cause some
discomfort on a ground defense oriented team like
Garrison
The Bulldogs are relatively experienced ac-
cording to Yarborough with some 14 lettermen
returning this season Yarborough predicted at the
beginning of the season that Garrison could wind up
being the dark horse'' contender in District 22AA
He added that a lot of players came back onto th*
field this season following coaching changes on the
Bulldog roster that could odd to Garrison's district
potential
Yarborough looks for the Bulldogs to be this year's
surprise team not discounting the role his charges
may have to play with two potential chargers like
Tatum and Shelbyville sharing th* 21A A package
' We ve got to keep going and stay healthy for the
rest of the season " says Yarborough There's not
going to be any letting down at this point Even
though we ve gamed confidence and are improving
rapidly on defense with marked advances on the of
fensive line each week we cannot relaw for a
second "
