Beckville’s interception specialist Cedric Barryer
almost had the snatch with less than two minutes
remaining that would have cinched a Friday night
win over Timpson
But it wobbled out of his hands and into the clut-
ches of a Bear only 10 yards from the goal setting
them up for a 26 22 win over the Bearcats
"Something like that just breaks your heart "
Coach Ed Thomas remarked after the game.
"We had a couple of breakdowns, but all in all, it
was the best game we played this year,"
That the Bearcats outplayed the Bears was eviden-
ced by the statistics
Beckville piled up 256 yards rushing to only 1 56
totaled by Timpson
And though Timpson netted 95 yards passing to
Beckville's 57 this slight edge was nullified by a
total of 1 2 penalties against the Bears resulting in 85
lost yards Beckville only gave up 10 yards on two
penalties.
And even if Timpson did boot the ball further
averaging 47 yards with four punts compared to
Beckvilles three tries for 32 average yards Beckville
managed to return the ball 117 yards compared to
only 56 for Timpson

"They (the team) are broken hearted but that
may be good for them next time said Thomas im-
plying that the team may buckle down and con-
centrate on avoiding costly mistakes
The first score of the game came mid way into the
first quarter when the Bears Chris Hudman flipped
one to Trey Stewart for pay dirt from one yard out
But the extra point attempt failed
The Bearcats quickly responded first with Cedric
Barryer rushing in from 20 yards out The kick was no
good but the Bearcats were on the tote board with
3 30 remaining
Then only 18 seconds into the second quarter
Cyrano Barryer found an opening and went dancing
and weaving for 26 yards to capture another
scoreboard entry
And Terry Riley rushed in ogam with just as much
ease to rack up another two points
The remainder of the first half was marked by two
Bearcat interceptions one by Cedric and another by
Riley but neither team found opportunity to score
But 3 30 into the second half the Bears Shown
Hargrove took advantage of one of the Bearcats of-
fensive breakdowns to dance in from 33 yards out
raising their score to 14 to 12
Once ogam though ’he Bearcats were able to
rout the Bears efforts to score a conversion with a
fake boot set up converted to a pass attempt
With only 9 second* remaining in the half the
Bearcats did it again this time on a pass from Chris
Hudman to Craig Richardson And this time a con-

version attempt succeeded
Riley quickly responded, toting ono in from 19 yar-
ds out with 7:11 remaining in the third quarter.
A penalty call on the Bears gave the Bearcats
another chance after a boot that missed the uprights
and Riley sailed on an opportunity to switch tactics
and bring in the conversion.
The score was now 22-20 in Beckville's favor and
the next several minutes of play looked like it was
going to stay that way.
