Ol’ Elmo rode into town on the coattails of that first
norther and that signals football in any language.
This is our first trip to Stephenville and we already feel
welcome, what with the friendly atmosphere of the fans.
We’U try to give you a little something different in the way
of footbaH forecasting, with our pick of the winners and the
score we think each team will emerge with.
Some may not agree with our picks, but that’s the way
the footbaH bounces as we look back at our .750 or better
average. Any time anyone has a comment, we’ll welcome a
letter.
The area is new to us, so we’ll have to get warmed up
this week and try to get a good look at the various teams
Let’s try these on for size:
TEXAS LUTHERAN 21-TARLETON 14 - Too many
starters for the Bulldogs. Buddy Fornes will have the
Texans up and will make a battle of it for the home folks.
STEPHENVILLE 14-FORT WORTH NOLAN 7 - They tell
me the Jackets lost all but one last year. Old Leon has the
Jackets inethe right frame of mind and that win will be the
first of several this year.
- WEATHERFORD 20-BURLESON 13 - Kangaroos have 15
lettermen back and are a little stronger than ‘73. Elks
haven’t had a winning season in the past 3 years and
don’t have the habit.
ABILENE COOPER 16-BROWNWOOD 14 - Close battle
here, with the Cougs hanging on. Gordon Wood doesn’t
have quite the team as in the past.
ABILENE 27-SWEETWATER 13 - Eagles and Mustangs
have both been picked to finish last in their districts. >
Abilene has a little more class and a new coach.
CISCO 54-RANGER 0 - A mismatch here if there ever
was one. Loboes will play everyone including the waterboy.
COMANCHE 20-GRANBURY 6 - Too many tomnahawks
in Hie wigwam. Indians return almost entire offense and
defense.
DUBLIN 13-EASTLAND 9 - Going against the experts in
this one. Lions have a strong running attack and a good
defense, although the Mavericks have many starters back
HAMILTON 13-HICO 12 - This one could be just the
reverse, with the Bulldogs getting the nod due to Hico’s
coaching change.
GLEN ROSE 33-MILISAP 6 - Tigers off to a big start
against a weak team. Coach Paul Schuette’s team to enjoy
this one.
BANGS 19-SANTA ANNA 6 - A good Class A team
better than a good Class B team.
MERIDIAN 19-GRANDVIEW 8 - Meridian remembers
9-1 record last year and will be out to better that mark
BRECKENRIDGE 20-STaMFORD 12 - The Bucks always
get off to a fast start and Bulldogs too light in the line.
JACKSBORO 21-AZLE 13 - Too many Tigers in the Cage
and the Hornets lacking in depth.
BALLINGER 27-BRADY 6 - Bearcasts have strongest
team in years, with passing of Brady’s Gary Scott to be
rykoned with.
^WINTERS 14-CLYDE 8 - Two teams evenly matched,
mith Clyde capable of turning it around. Neither team too
strong.
ABILENE WYLIE 13-CROSS PLAINS 7 - Both teams
rated near the bottom of their districts. Cross Plains has
new coach and they may not have the system down pat
EARLY 12-RISING STAR 7 - Too many starters back
with Longhorns, but ‘Twinkle City’ did the impossible last
year, and could upset the cart.
SANTO 22-TOLAR 13 - Jim Coleman at Tolar has no
offensive starters back and that spells trouble. Coach Virgil
Judy has some giants in the line at Santo.
GORDON 26-WALNUT SPRINGS 19 - With 15 returning
lettermen back. Coach Boyd Lowery should come up with a
winning combination.
GUSTINE 22-CHEROKEE 13 - Juan Escobar and mates
should give Coach Don Hodges a smile or two.
SHOTS IN THE DARK - Clifton over Joshua, Springtown
over Boyd, Aledo over Cedar Hill, Mart over China
Springs, San Saba over Goldthwaite, Baird over
Throckmorton, Whitney over Masonic Home, McGregor
over Gatesville.
