DECEMBER 2, 1954
Mrs. McCarroll—
(Continued from Front Page)
1802 . . . Ripton . . . Vermont . . .
My dear and honored mother . . .
I take my pen in hand this day
... to writo a brief message to
you . , . and your esteemed fam-
ily. I pray that all is well with you.
You will be happy to know . . 4
of the good fortune that I am en-
joying ... as the wife of Mr. Char-
les Johnson.
Mr. Johnson has just returned
from a journey to Philadelphia
, . . being gone two weeks .
Ever solicitous of my welfare .
he presented to me upon his re
turn, a gift which he felt would
aid me in the dispatching of my
household chores.
It is my greatest desire at this
writing . . that you should see
this gift.
He has purchased anew iron
cook stove . . . which as you no
doubt know, was recently invent
ed by Mr. Benjamin Franklin of

the afore-mentioned city . . . th
stove is square in shape . . . rest
ing on four cunningly carved leg.
. each leg terminating in a foot
resembling a lion's claw ... a
space within the stove . . holds the
heat in such a manner as to make
possible baking and roasting with
in . . . The top of the stove has
four evenly spaced eyes . . . the
eyes being openings about the
size of the top of the small pail
you use for lowering the butter
into the well . . . Covering these
openings are lids ... of such a
shape as to fit exactly there upon
It is upon these lids that the
vessels are placed when cooking.
There is a separate compart-
ment within the stove . . . which
serves as a fire box . . . Since
wood must of a necessity be of
smaller proportions . . . than is
that which is used in a fire place
. I fear that 1 shall become quite
spoiled ... the carrying in of the
wood taking so little effort.
Mr. Johnson has this moment
requested . . . that I tender to you
and yours his kindest regards . . .
and best wishes for your contin-
ued prosperity and health.
I shall eagerly await your reply
to . . . your dutiful and obedient
daughter .. . Amanda Adams John-
son.
August 7, 1802.
You know I often wonder what
Amanda might have written to
her mother . . . had she been liv-
ing in this age of jets and jangled
nerves . . . Probably something
like this:
Dear Mom . . . Just a note to
say . . . Hank is so excited over
our new stove . . .We are getting
our new two-oven<' banquet job ...
I can't wait for you to see it . . .
I've gotta run now . . . two couples
are coming tonight and we are go-
ing to the club for dinner ... I
cannot cook here until I get the
new stove . . . write when you can
Hank says tell you he said Hi!
Love, Liz."
