DEAR POLLY — My cream-colored cotton blend
sweater has red oil paint on it. I am afraid to try
anything on it until I feel sure it will work.
An easy way to remove a used candle from the
glass is to put it in your freezer upside down. Tapping
against the palm of your hand should remove it
without any messy digging. — MRS. S.S.
DEAR MRS. S.S. — Thank you for your Pointer — I
had several votive lights leftover from the holidays
that needed to be cleaned because the candles had
burned so low. Your suggestion worked like a charm.
The wax all fell out in one clean lump. I left mine in
the freezer overnight.
I hope the following will work as well for you and
those oil paint spots. Apply turpentine to spots to
soften, rinse and then rub with bar soap, rinse and
launder as usual. — POLLY

NEW YORK (NEA) - Who
says the military knows
beans about fashion’’
Didn't the Army offer
Kasper a contract to design
for 8300 a week? True, it was
during World War II. He was
just Herbert Kasper, then,
the son of a New York
porcelain importer, and the
Army wanted him to do
costumes for their amateur
shows. But 8300 was good
money, then, and the brass
saw something in Herbert
Kasper
“Designing costumes for
soldier shows was a joke
because you couldn't even
get material," he says. "For
one show I designed white,
single-breasted jackets
which shrank when they
were washed. So I said, let's
have them wear mess jack-
ets instead."
That's what the Army saw
in him: smarts and creativi-
ty. If they hadn't lost his
discharge papers and sent
him running all over looking
for them, he might have
decided to take the job and
stay on
But he was 19 and impa-
tient and, he says, "I de-
cided to come home and go
to Parsons, which was affili-
ated with NYU where I’d
been a student.”
That was smart, too.
Every year Parsons School
of Fashion has a student
fashion show and that year,
Mr John, the hat designer,
bought both Kasper's
entries, though neither was
a hat.
Well, a knack for fashion
doesn't necessarily include a
knack for heads Kasper
couldn't draw them. “I was
embarrassed to tell him so I
never sent any sketches.
Finally, he wrote me a terri-
ble letter tolling me I was a
stupid kid, passing up a
great opportunity. Then, I
don't know why I’d never
thought of it before, I picked
