A. E. Laney. power nlant ch-

tern Electric Service Company,
at Jacksonville, retired from ac-
tive duty with the company w
November 1, after 42 years
eight months of service in fte
electric industry, the last 2¡¡
vears of which were spent |n
Jacksonville.
Mr. Laney has spent virtually
his entire adult life in the elec-
tric industry and has seen $
grow from a relatively small In-
dustry comprising many small
isolated "light plants", to one gf
the nation's largest industries
consisting of huge power plantii
inter-connected by high voltage
transmission lines throughout the
nation.
Mr. Laney has made a sub-
stantial contribution to the elec-
tric industry in the area during
its greatest growth and develop-
ment period. He began his car-
eer with the Company as a po-
wer plant operator at Troup <yi
March 1, 1923. Since then he has
served as manager of the Com-
pany at Troup, Kemp, 'which
used to be a part of the system),
and Rusk. Since 1942, Mr. Lan-
ey has been chief engineer at
the Jacksonville power plant.
A native of Texas, Mr. Laney
was born at Alvord and later
moved to Troup, where he mar-
ried the former Alta Lee Sal-
mon of Troup. They have three
children and five grandchildren.
A daughter, Bonnie Ruth Fields,
lives in Tyler, a daughter, Mary
Frances Alexander, lives in Hou-
ston, and a son. Bobby Earl La-
ney. lives in Sherman.
While he was living in Rusk,
Mr. Laney served as president
of the Kiwanis Club and served
six years on the school board.
Mr. and Mrs. Laney are mem-
bers of the Baptist Church.

Halbert
' Lige M. Halbert. 71. of Alto,
died Thursday at his home after
a long illness. Funeral services
were Saturday at 2 p.m. at the
First Baptist Church of Alto. Of-
ficiating were the Rev. L. A. Tb-
igpen. the Rev. C. H. Haley and
the Rev. Don Copeland. Burial
was at Oakland Cemetery near
Rusk under the direction of O.
T. Allen & Son Funeral Home.
Mr. Halbert was a life-time
resident of Cherokee County and
a long-time resident of Alto. He
was a long time employee of
Gulf Oil Company. For the past
several years he was custodian
of the Alto First Baptist Churcb.
He was a deacon in the church
¡and active in church affairs.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Susie Halbert of Alto; one bio-
er. Wyatt Halbert of Rusk, and
several nephews and nieces.
Pallbears were James Yarbr-
ough, Donald Yarbrough, Joe Hal-
bert. Knnis Halbert, Graday
Creel and T. D. Pcarmnn Dea-
cons of the First Baptist Church
in Alto served as honorary pall-
bearers.

The Rusk Rotary Club held
its regular weekly meeting on
Wednesday at the Rusk Hotel
with President Frank Morgan
presiding.
Introducing the program for
the noon meeting was Mr. Lloyd
Pipes. Mr. Pipes presented Mr.
Marshall Dear who gave a mcpt
entertaining and informative talk
on two subjects related to tfee
banking business. First half <pf
he talk concerned the Federal
Reserve Banking system, its fun-
ctions, etc. The second half ff
the talk was in connection wfth
the Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation. Emphasis was plac-
ed on the relation of the two
«subjects discussed with the {p-
cal banks on up the scale to tfce
j larger banks of our country.
