We can't afford
to waste It.
Independent Cattlemen's
Association President Roy
Wheeler said today he >■
well pleased with the re-
sults of the 2nd annual
statewide calf sale held
Sept 29 w hich grossed $156,
351 02 to help operate the
Association
The sale was held at the
Atascosa Livestock Ex
change in Pleasanton arid
raised about $40,000 more
than last year's sale
Wheeler said groas re-
ceipts will increase even
more in the weeks to come
as the counties which didn't
have time to ship calf
donations to Pleasanton
hold local auctions Almost
a dozen counties have in-
dicated to him thai they
were unable to get their
calves to the auction in
lime
I am very appreciative
of the response shown by
our buyers and by our ICA
members who worked hard
to get these calves donat
ed." said Wheeler "Our
Association now has a solid
financial base for the next
year from which to oper
ale We will be able to
provide even more repre
sentation in Austin and
Washington for our mem
bers and people in the
farming and ranching in-
dustry "
ICA is currently involved
in reworking major por-
tions of the federal govern-
ment's brucellosis prog-
ram for presentation at a
national meeting on bru
cellosis eradication Oct 28-
30 in San Diego, Calif . in
monitoring public work-
shops to be held in Dallas
Nov 7 9 by the USDA and
teh Council on Environ-
mental Quality concerning
land use. and in fighting
against a bill proposed by
Secretary of Agriculture
Bob Bergland which would
expand his powers, enab-
ling him to control the
intrastate movement of
livestock by use of quaran-
tine
ICA recently helped de-
feat an amendment which
would have limited the ex-
ports of hides That amend-
ment was defeated on the
House floor by a vote of 218
to 186 last week
"This money railed at
the local level will help ua
expand our legislative cap-
abilities so that we can
protect our industry from
harm," said Wheeler "We
have to be on our toes all
the time."
As part of the sale ac-
tivities, the Association
held a "Name that Steer"
contest Winners of that
contest were Mr and Mrs
C F Khotonof Sweetwater
They selected the name,
"Chisholm," for ICA's
Ijonghorn mascot in honor
of the men who forged the
first cattle drives through
Texas to establish cattle
markets The Rhotons re-
ceived a $100 prize from
Mr Wheeler
Buyers of the I^onghorn
steer were Mr and Mrs
Sam Ford and family from
Jefferson County They
paid $1,050 for Chisholm
with the understanding
that they would either
donate the steer back to be
kept in Pleasanton for the
next sale or keep htm on
their ranch until the third
annual sale is held Chis-
holm is the Association's
permanent mascot
