Armchair Travelogue
by Leon and Ethel Pledger
Most people are born
with a little wonderlust, but
we seemed to have been
blessed with a double dose
of it, so after saying good-
bye to our friends and a big
thank you for the nice
dinners, parties and food
for the freezer, we start out
once again. As usual, our
plans are very flexible, but
at this time we are headed
west with the Pacific
Northwest and Canada our
goal.
Our first stop was Over-
ton, Texas for a camp-out
with our "Big D" Winne-
bago friends. After a
covered dish supper and a

fish fry, we have decided
the first thing we do is try
to lose some of these
pounds we have put on.
Luckily, one of our going
away presents was a fancy
new diet that we plan to try
out-sure hope it works.
Leaving Overton Sunday,
we planned to drive to
some place between Wich-
ita Fails and Amarillo, but
as we neared Terrell we
decided to turn north to
Lake Lavon near Wylie,
Texas to look for "South
Fork." the house used in
filming the TV series
"Dallas." We have found
the best place to get direc-
tions is the police station
and sure enough we were
told South Fork was about
halfway between Wylie and
Piano. We drove west from
Wylie and turned north at
Murphy and after about
two miles we found the
house. You can get a good
view from the road and
through the locked gates of
the while brick entrance.
We were like all the other
tourists trying to get a look
at South Fork. Last sum-
mer we had people ask if
we had seen South Fork
and we had to say no, but
this summer we are ready
for their questions.
Traveling along these
long Texas roads that we
have been over before we
began reminiscing about
other times. One time we

REPAIRMAN AWAY
WITH GAS AIR CONDITIONING
We've built Arkla Servel gas air conditioners for
you. Not for servicemen. You won't have costly
compressor repairs because there s no compres-
sor. Ami Arkla Servel gas air conditioners have
a standard automatic ignition — no pilot to light-
plus an energy-saving motor, and heat exchangers
that are effective on even the hottest days. Call
your Arkla Servel dealer or your gas company for
a free no-obligation estimate of your air ( >;|
conditioning needs. We'll be riuht over. '

Seeing a sign to Palo

"Texas." This is a musical
drama of Panhandle his-
tory and the sound and
visual effects are the best
we have seen anywhere.
We sat through a drizzling
rain the night we were
there and the flash of light-
ning and the sound of thun-
der as background for the
story was so real that
everybody thought it really
was a storm. Later in the
night a real storm moved in
and we were stranded by
high water for a while next
day. We hope to go back to
see "Texas" again some-
day.
Passing through Ama-
rillo we remembered the
times we turned northwest
here for trips into Colo-
rado, Utah, Wyoming.
Montana and Canada. Tra-
veling on west we came to
Tucamcari, New Mexico.
This town began as a Rock
Island Railroad construc-
tion camp known as Six-
Shooter Siding. later be-
came the town of Tucum-
cari. It took its new name
from a mountain at the
edge of town that took its
name from an old legend
about a major tragedy re-
sulting in the death of
Tocom, a young Apache
brave and his sweetheart
Kari. daughter of an Apa-
che chief. How a town gets
its name has always been
interesting to us, especially
one as romantic and rhy-
thmical as Tucamcari.
As we approached Albu-
querque from the East we
got a spectacular view as
we descended seven miles
through the mountain to
the city below. Albuquer-
que is a thriving city at the
foot of Mt. Sandia and
along the Rio Grande Riv-
er. It was first settled in the
ItitHl's and today the auth-
entic character of Old
Town has been preserved.
As you walk through the
gaslit Plaza, dozens of gal-
leries and shops offer arts
and crafts and the Indians
display their jewelry on the
sidewalks around the Plaza
as they did years ago.
We enjoyed dinner and
visiting in the Albuquerque
home of John and Billie
Ruth Kzell and their child-
ren. Steve. Andy and
Nancy. Their parents and
grandparents are Roy and
Pauline Isgate of Rusk and
Mrs. Fred Ezell of Mav
delle.
Look for us down the
road.

A FAITH PROVIDES US WITH A LIFELONG EDUCATION
f
PKM-i

9t graduation time. we are reminded that while one phase of our
education ma; ha\e been completed, there is another kind that
must continue for as long as we live. The time-worn expression.
"Ii\e an<l learn'. definitely applies here: for when we stop
learning and cominee ourselves that we know everything there is
to know, we begin the downhill slide toward mental stagnation.
Self-improvement is always a good post-graduate course, ami
none of us is ever so nearly perfect that we no longer have any
need of it. The Church or Temple of your choice is the hest place
to enroll and let God teach you to he more loving, kind-hearted,
generous, patient, thoughtful, etc. The homework that
accompanies these lessons will earn you a higher degree in
happiness than you had ever thought possible.
Teach me. mv God and King.
In all things thee to see.
And what I do in am thing.
To do it as for thee.
