Cherokee County Fruit
Growers will want to make
plans to attend the 28th An-
nual Texas Fruit Growers
Conference Oct. 7-8 at
Texas A&M. Registration
will begin at 8 a.m. on the
7th. On Monday, Oct. 6 at 6
p.m. there will be a special
New Growers Shortcourse
in conjunction with the con-
ference. This short course
will be an intensive course
outlining production prac-
tices recommended in
commercial fruit
operations. Pre-
registration is required for
the New Grower's Shor-
tcourse. For more infor-
mation contact Joe Daniel,
Cherokee County Exten-
sion Horticulturist.
Research shows adding
wood ashes to garden soils
does little to improve the
nutrient level. However, it
will raise the soil pH. In
Cherokee County and most
of East Texas soils are
usually acid and adding
ashes to the garden site
would be beneficial. Do not
dump ashes in one place,
but spread them over the
garden. A soil test should
be taken every two or three
years to monitor soil pH.
***
Watch for bargains on
garden equipment. Mer-
chants wanting to make
room for Christmas items
usually offer good buys on
mowers, hoses and
sprinklers this time of
year.

cent increase in sales tax
returns for the month of
August as compared to
August in 1979.
Rusk had a one percent
increase in return figures,
which are based on the
amount of sales tax taken
in the stores and businesses
in the town.
Wells came in on the
negative side of the zero
mark, with a 9 percent
decrease in the returns as
compared to the same
overall time period last
year.
For Alto, the 115 percent
increase amount to
$1,218.66 added to the city's
coffers for a total of
$45,773.51 rebated to Alto
for 1980
City officials said during
the regular city council
meeting earlier this month
that the increase is
probably due to the influx
of Irby Constructin Co.
workers in the city. The
workers are constructing
the new Southwestern
Power Co. high power line
which transects the county
a little north of Alto.
Rusk received $4,079.21
for the August period which
ended Sept. 4. To date,
Rusk has received
$73,201.46 in rebated sales
tax.
Jacksonville was reim-
bursed $20,842.72 of sales
taxes for a total so far this
year of $445,183.17.
Wells, received $899 61 in
rebates from the state
comptroller's office for a
total of $6,613.03, down
from $7,318.20 of the prior
year.
