Historical Marker
Designates Cheeseland
You may not know that
Cheeseland was the name
of a Texas town near the
Angelina-Cherokee County
line in days gone by, but
now there is a historial
marker on the Old Alto-
Homer Road to call your
attention to that fact.
The marker was offically
dedicated last week with
about 40 people-dignitaries
and citizens from the area-
on hand to witness the
event.
Bob Bowman, chairman
of the Angelina County
Historical Commission,
was master of ceremonies.
The invocation was given by
Dr. John Cravens and
dedicatory remarks were
given by Angelina County
Judge Dan Jones.
Jones gave a brief
history of the area and read
the inscription on the
marker.
Special guests present
were Nell Humphrey
Stokes, who has resided in
the area most of her life;
Angelina County Com-
missioner Joe Berry (Pet.
2) , Woody Gant; Bill Pin-
ner, an area justice of the
peace; Gerald Goodwin,
D.A. FROM Angelina County
; and Joe O'Quinn, a for-
mer judge from Angelina
County.
The inscription on the
plaque is headed
Cheeseland and reads, "In
1844 Jacob Ferguson Hum-
phrey (died 1882), a native
of Wales, built a log cabin
and stockade in this area.
The community that grew
up near his homesite
became known as
Cheeseland before the Civil
War. The name was chosen
because of the special
cheese made and sold here
by German natives
Caroline and Wenzell
Hillenkamp. Located on
the old Homer and Alto
Road, an early mail route,
and the site of a post office,
Cheeseland remained an
active settlement until the

The conference was held
in Washington D.C., Dec. 4

infant mental health and

The symposium en-
couraged a vigorous inter-

established a stronger net-

Tuscan Vegetable Medley is
subtly seasoned with basil.
Herbs impart flavor, a-
roma and sometimes color
to foods. This pork and
pasta dish gets its hearty
flavor from Campbell's
Chunky Vegetable soup sea-
soned with basil and garlic.
To obtain the most flavor
from basil—or tarragon, ore-
gano, sage or thyme—crush
the herb between your fing-
ers before using it. Sautéfe-
ing the basil and minced up
garlic first releases more
flavor in melted butter or oil.
