Anyone who used the
Southern Pacific Railroad
through Rusk and Alto in
the past or who might use
the railroad in the future is
asked to contact the Rusk
Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber is currently
compiling a list of
businesses and
organizations supporting
the reopening of the rail
line, known as the Cotton
Belt, from Rusk to Lufkin.
At a meeting of a cham-
ber subcommittee concer-
ning the rail line last week,
the possibility of having
service on the line
reestablished was
discussed and promoted.
"In April, 1961, our Cot-
ton Belt rail service was
discontinued because of an
embargo," said committee
spokesman James I.
Perkins. "It is important
for our economic survival
for this rail service to be re-
instated."
The committee asks that
persons interested ' in
having the rail service re-
established contact the
chamber. Nancy Boynoff,
chamber executive
secretary, will formulate a
letter for the company or
individual to approve and
sign, Perkins said.
An investigation of the
discontinuation of the ser-
vice is currently being con-
ducted by the Interstate
Commerce Commission,
the federal agency which
regulates railroads.
Perkins noted that the
service to Rusk and Alto
had been discontinued
without proper procedures
being followed.
"They (Southern
Pacific) have discontinued
service without filing for an
abandonment application
with the ICC," Perkins
said. "This is why the ICC
is now investigating the
lack of service and the end
of use of the line."
"People who were users
of the line and people who
might at some time in the
future be prospective users
of the line are asked to help
in our efforts to maintain
Southern Pacific service to
Rusk, Alto and Lufkin,"
Perkins said.
