History, Nature Outdoors

Week in the great outdoors.
Lessons were set up to
correlate history and
J nature study in the Rusk
« and Alto area.
* On Monday, the students
* Irisited the Wilcox syrup
* mill. They learned how the
£ cane is harvested,
^-processed, canned, and
_made ready to market.
~ Tuesday; the students
-went to the world-famous
^footbridge in Rusk. They
^counted 830 boards in the
footbridge and learned why
§ was built.
- On Wednesday, a trip to
Jbe nature trail on the Rusk
Elementary School cam-
pus helped them to identify
trees and discover why
leaves changed colors.
Thursday brought a trip
to Jim Hogg State Park and
the Rusk college site.
The week was concluded
with a trip to Mission San
Francisco de las Tejas in
Weches. While the group
walked a nature trail, they
discovered trees and lan-
dmarks.
A two and one-half mile
hiking trail left everyone
breathless. Picnics and
outdoor recreation helped
stir spirito and an en-
joyment of the coutryside's
beauty set an enjoyable
day.
"Hie outdoors is a gooa
place to teach all of our
major subjects," say
teachers Kerrie Huffman,
Bobbie Fagan, and Betty
Christopher. "We
discovered the ease of out-
door education with lessons
discovering our com-
munity."

Funeral services for
Bernice Wayne Dunn, 35, of
Rusk were held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday in the Wallace-
Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the
Wallace-Thompson Funer-
al Home chapel with the
Rev. Don Copeland and the
Rev. Jim Boone officiating.
Burial was in Cedar Hill
Cemetery.
Mr. Dunn died Saturday
morning, Dec. 5, at
Groveton.
He had lived at Rusk sin-
ce 1968, was a veteran of
the Merchant Marines and
a machine operator.
He is survived by his
father and step-mother,
B.G. Dunn and Bernice
Dunn of Rusk; his mother
and step-father, Susan and
L.D. Roberts of Rusk;
three sisters, Lillian Hay
and Lois Goodman of Rusk,
and Glenda Chamberlain of
Jacksonville; four
brothers, Arthur Dunn,
Jerry Warren, Eddy Dunn
and Jackie Dunn, all of
Rusk; and his gran-
dmothers, Mrs. Susan
Swearingen of Crockett,
and Mrs Mary D. Dunn of
Rusk.

Huffman attended the Out-
door Education Workshop
in Newton, during this past

teachers agree it was a
benefit to their educations
as well as for the children.
