The Environmental
Protection Agency has
granted a Section 18
Emergency Exemption to
the State of Texas for the
use of Fusilade (TM) her-
bicide to control john-
songrass in soybeans.
Fusilade, a product of
ICI Americas Inc., is a
new, selective,
postemergence herbicide
for over-the-top use in
broadleaf crops to control
both annual and perennial
grasses. Fusilade is
systemic and is absorbed
quickly through leaf sur-
faces. It then moves in both
the xylem and phloem of
the weed, accumulating in
the growth points. This
causes normal moisture
conditions, putting an end
to any further weed com-
petition the crop.
Complete dea>. of grasses
occurs in three to four
weeks. Fusilade has also
proven to be rainfast one
hour after application.
Under the Exemption,
Fusilade may be applied at
a maximum rate of .05
pounds (1.0 pint) active
ingredient per acre per
season in a spray volume of
10 to 40 gallons per acre.
Fusilade may only be ap-
plied by ground equipment,
and a miximum of two ap-
plications are allowed
throughout the growing
season. Applications
should be made when
rhizome johnsongrass
reaches 12 inches in height.
Fusilade should be ap-
plied with a nonphytotoxic
crop oil concentrate, con-
taining 15 to 20 percent sur-
factant, at one pint to one
quart per acre. Do not ap-
ply within 60 days of har-
vest, and do not rotate or
replant crops other than
soybeans or cotton within
60 days of the last ap-
plication.
Before using Fusilade,
read all directions on the
container label, and follow
the recommendations
given on the supplemental
label.
Fusilade contains four
pounds active ingredient
per gallon.
