Applications have been made for
more new clubs this year than ev-

Despite the fact that many will
not have the money to buy com-
mercial fertilizer for their crops,
the boys are planning to use barn
yard fertilizer to the limit of re-
sources. A fine spirit is evident
among the husky lads despite ap-
parent obstacles. The parents are
cooperating to the limit. Most of
the old clubs are re-electing their
adult club leaders and the new
ones are choosing men who also
have the interest of the boys at
heart. The leaders are pledging

I am a candidate for Commis-
sioner of Precinct No. 3, subject
to the action of the coming Dem-
ocratic primary election. In my
humble judgment the office of a
county commissioner is one of tne
most important in the county, and
in this connection I don’t consid-
er it out of place to mention some
of my aims and policies in event
I should be elected to serve the
people of this precinct.
For instance, I would not be in
favor of paying out standard sal-
aries indiscriminately to road
hands, and in no case would I
pay a flat rate of as much as $5
per day. .
Again, I would certainly be in
favor of employing the citizens on
given country road leading away
from their homes to market, to-
gether with their teams, rather
than bringing in labor not inter-
ested in such a community.
I see no great need of the big
road tractors, save in cases of
the grading a road or ditching,
when the same work can be done
by graders and drags drawn by
the farmers’ teams. I might men-
tion in this connection that too
much gasoline is being used on
the roads, when the county has no
gas field of its own, and farmers
with idle teams would appreciate
such employment—-in far,*, be more
than glad to get it at reasonable
wages.
Another thing that hs occurred
to me is that some one or more
individuals in the various locali-
ties in the precinct should be se-

ment would I entertain the idea
that I am the only man in the dis-
trict qualified for this very im-
portant position. It is not in this
spirit that my announcement for
re-election is made, but it is simply
because of the solicitation of my
friends who also feel that I have
served my district well, fairly and
impartially, giving each section as
much attention as possible, making
the available funds count for the
most.
I am more than willing to leave
it to the people of this precinct as
to whether there hav been im-
provements made in our communi-
ty roads since I was elected your
commissioner. All my transactions
as commissioner are on record, and
my record is open for your investi-
gation. My experience in making
you better roads and keeping them
up after they are made, should nat-
urally be an advantage to the pre-
cinct. If you see fit to re-elect me
I shall strive continually to render
honest, fair, impartial and efficient
service to all the precinct. It is up-
on my own merit and not upon the
demerit of any one that I make
my announcement for re-election as
your commissioner of this precinct,
subject to the Democratic primar-
ies, July, 1932.

The fire department was called
to the residence of Dr. H. H. Hil-
liard and family, on Buffalo St.,
about the noon hour Thursday of
last week, where an insipient blaze
was extinguished in the ceiling
over the kitchen. The greatest
damage resulted from the water
that was necessary in putting out
the fire.
This has been a busy week in
the Van Zandt county district
lected to look after emergency
road and bridge work where high
water and washouts occur, rather
than wait indefinitely for the com-
missioner of the precinct to be no-
tified and get his hands on the
job.
Also, if elected your commission-
er, when a man is employed to
do a day's work, it will mean a
day, and not a part of it. In other
words I take it that any man
employed in road work is honor
bound to render just as good ser-
vice on full time as if employed
in any other line of business.
These are a few of my platform
-planks, if you should call them
that, and during the campaign I
shall be glad to discuss them or
any other matters that may arise,
with all the voters of the precinct.
Yours for a fair race- and may
the best man win.

Ike has a plain economical way
about him that marks him as a
good financier, a characteristic
that should be found in each man
who qualifies for a public office.
We need officers who have work-
ed, and who know the value of a
dollar, and who are willing to use
the same management for the
county’s affairs as they do for
their own. Strict economy in coun-
ty affairs should soon enable us
to secure a lower tax rate.
To prove to the public that Mr.
Allred will serve the people with
an unbiased and unprejudiced
will, he plainly makes the asser-
tion that: “The best way to do
away with an unfair law is to en-
force it, thereby showing the evils
of the same, and causing a re-
peal of the law by the legislature."
Voters who are new in the coun-

large crowd is expected to be
present for the beginning of the
criminal docket.
There have been fairly good
crowds at the county seat this
week, a number of attorneys from
over the county and from out of
the county, with many folks also
from all the rural communities,
not a few of whom have been
looking after their taxes, guarding
against penalties that will be add-

month.
The civil case set for next Mon-
day is that of Cordie Lee vs. Mrs.
Mollie Moses. These parties reside

tried at a former term of the dis-
