bushels was sold through one of
the local peach associations at a i
price that represented a good re-
turn to the owners. This orchard
yielded top quality fruit because I
of a rigid schedule of fertilizing, •
cultiation, pruning, fruit thinning l
and spraying. At the peek of the I
harvest season, over 1,500 bushels
of peaches were harvested in one (
day. The Hughes Orchard and its I
success represents a year-round i
job for the owners. During the i
fall and winter months the trees
are carefully pruned, treated for I
borers and sprayed for the con-
trol of San Jose Scale and Bac- i
terial Leaf Spot. During the spring
season two separate applications
of 8-8-8 fertilizer are made, which
provides ample plant food for tree I
growth and fruit development.
Special care in harvesting, grading i

Insect And Disease Control
Studies Are Conducted In
East Texas By A&M College
The Entomology Department of
A&M College through Its repre-
sentative, Dr Dial Martin, has
conducted an insect and disease
study at the Hughes Orchard this
season New insecticides included
in this test are Load Arsenate,
Sulphur, DDT, Toxaphene, Chlor-
dane, Phygon, and a form of In-
soluble Copper. The purpose of the
test is to determine if cheaper and
more effective spray materials
can be developed in preventing in-
sect and disease damage to East
Texas orchards. A test is also be-
ing conducted to determine the ef-
fectiveness of DDT. Chlordane and
Parathion to control peach tree ,
I borers in the trunks of peach
trees. During the 1951 season all
of the spray materials that were
used gave fair results. The Toxa-
phene plot produced the cleanest
fruit. Additional tests will be con-
ducted in 1952.
According to H F Morris, hor-
ticulturist, of the Experiment Sta-
tion No. 2, located near Tyler,
there are 135 peach varieties be-
ing tested at the station. From the
first production on the three-year-
old trees some of the promising
varieties of early yellow free- 1
