Van Zandt county PMA commit-
tee, reports that 1,653 farmers in
Van Zandt county received as-
sistance from the Van Zandt
County PMA committee amount-
ing to $203,197.69 in 1951. In or-
der to receive the assistance these
farmers had to provide money
and labor which more than match-
ed this figure. In fact conserva-
tion practices amounted to more
than a $500,000 business in Van
Zandt countv last year Brown
says these funds and labor ac-
complished the following things
in this county:
384,042 feet of field terraces
were built on 50 farms to protect
959 acres of land from erosion.
48,328 cubic yards of dirt were
moved on 25 farms to build di-
version terraces protecting sever-
al hundred acres of farm land.
7.4 acres of sod waterway were
built on six farms to carry off
terrace water
287,630 cubic yards of earth
were moved to build 335 farm
stock ponds on 297 farms in this
county.
6,187,040 pounds of fertilizer
were applied to approximately
30,000 acres of pasture and leg-
times on 1,369 farms.
2,420 tons of limestone were
applied to 2,420 acres of pasture
and cropland on 98 farms.
539,572 pounds of winter cover
crop seed were planted in the fall
of 1950 on 1,141 farms to seed
aporoximately 26,000 acres of
winter legumes.
162,029 pounds of pasture grass
seed were sowed on 765 farms to
improve approximately 7.930
acres of pasture.
This splendid record in conser-
vation work accomplished was
made possible bv the progressive
outlook of the Van Zandt County
farmers and the cooperation of all
agricultural agency workers in
the countv.
The soil that is held on the
farm by conservation carried out
through the ACP Program means
additional bales of cotton, bush-
els of corn, tons of milk, meat,
etc. This in turn means the pur-
chase of more farm machinery,
more automobiles, more shoes and
