Some 40 senior citizens from the Austin area stopped in Rusk last week for lunch as they made a sight seeing
tour through East Texas. Margaret Perkins, chairman of the Rusk Chamber of Commerce Tourism Commit-

OBITUARIES
H. Marvin Echols
H. Marvin Echols, 73, of Rusk
died Friday in a Dallas hospital af-
ter an extended illness.
The funeral was at 4 p.m. Satur-
day in First United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Robert Pate
officiating.
Burial was in Cedar Hill.
Cemetery under direction of
Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home.
Mr. Echols had lived at Rusk 60
years. He was a member of First

retired dairyman.
He is survived by two sons, Odis
Echols of Duncanville, and Charles
Echols of Humble; Three
daughters, Mrs. Frances
Schellhase of Friendswood, Mrs.
Patricia Haddock of Rusk, and Mrs.
Mina Harris of Nacogdoches; and
10 grandchildren.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
The Men of Method served as
honorary pallbearers.
Dr. Malcomb Hill
Services for Dr. Malcolmb B.
(Mack) Hill, 56, Rusk, were at 2
p.m. Saturday in Wallace-
Thompson Funeral chapel in Rusk,
with the Rev. Don Copeland of-
ficiating.
Dr. Hill died Thursday morning
at a Lufkin hospital following a
sudden illness.

He was born Feb. 9, 1929, in
Weldon, and was a Baptist. He was
currently dental director of Lufkin
State School where he had been
employed 10 years. He had also
practiced dentistry in Rusk, Bridge
City and Carrizo Springs. He was a
member of Lions Club International
and Texas Dental Association, a
graduate of University of Texas at
Austin, University of Texas Dental
School in Houston.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
.lacquelyn Hill, Ruskj a son,
Malcomb B. Hill Jr., Rusk; two
daughters, Patricia Rainey,
Richardson, and Parklyn Soltau,
Edina, Minn.; and his mother, Mrs.
Dorothy Musick, Rusk.
Pallbearers were Lincoln J.
Chapman, Lowell K. Chapman, Dr.
William E. Watson, Gene Hill, Billy
Lovelady, Don Ross, Buford W.
Williams and Robert Paiz.
Grace Francis
Mrs. Grace Francis of Rusk died
on April 8 following a sudden
illness.
Mrs. Francis was born in Grand
Saline on May 31,1900, to Mary and
Tom Marsden.
She had been a resident of Rusk
for the past 62 years. She was a
member of the First Christian
Church.
Mrs. Francis is survived by her
husband, Jewel Francis; two sons,
Richard Francis of Mascot, Tenn.
and Danny Francis of Wharton;
three daughters, Juanita Roach of
Lake Striker, Angeline Teat of
Longview and Rose Clifton of
Houston.
Other survivors include 11 gran-
dchildren and two great-
grandchildren and two nieces, Mrs.
Johnnie McDowell of Grand Prairie
and Viva Scott of Alto.
Private services will be held at
Cedar Hill Cemetery following
cremation at Restland, Dallas.
David D. Powell
David Dickinson Powell, 73,
resident of Houston for 20 years,
died Friday, March 29 after a brief
illness. He was born Jan. 4, 1912 in
Rusk.
Mr. Powell was a descendent of a
prominent Colonial American and
pioneer Texas Families. He was the
grandson of the late Carrie Sim-
mons and Eldridge C. Dickinson of
Rusk and Elizabeth Pleasant and
Cader Ballard Powell of St.
Augustine and the son of Kate
Dickinson and Cader Benjamin
Powell of Rusk.

He was a Veteran of World War
II, serving in the Atlantic Fleet as
an officer in the Merchant Marines.
He resided in San Antonio for many
years prior to moving to Houston in
1965.
Mr. Powell was employed by
Coca Cola Foods for 35 years until
his retirement in 1977. He earned
his real estate brokers license and
has been a Broker Associate at
Carriage Realty since' 1980.
He was a member of many social,
fraternal and cultural
organizations, including the
Houston Board of Realtors, Houston
Museum of Fine Arts, Sons of the
American Revolution, Sons of the
Republic of Texas, Audubon
Society, Toastmasters Club, Texas
Tech Alumni Association, Charter
Member of the Houston Racquet
Club and a Master of Masons. He
was an active member of the
Chapelwood United Methodist
Church and sang in the Chancel
Choir.
Mr. Powell is survived by his
wife, Emilou Walker Powell; three
daughters and ¿sons-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas C. Kiger, Mr. and
Mrs. Robert L. Nathan, all of
Houston, and Dr. and Mrs. Charles
F. Skripka of Dallas; three gran-
dchildren, Shannon Virginia
Skripka of Dallas and Dalton C.
Menziers of Houston; four sisters,
Mrs. William (Carolyn) Benner of
Houston, Mrs. Hollis (Kathrine)
Beall of Crockett, Mrs. Judith
Grace Powell of Beaumont, and
Mrs. Thomas W. (Josephine)
Thomason of Denton; two aunts,
Mrs. Robert Hatchett of Maryland,
and Mrs. George B. Moore, Jr. of
San Antonio.
Memorial services were at 11
a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at the
Chapelwood United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Carey B.
Sayers officiating. Memorial con-
tributions may be made to the
Chapelwood United Methodist
Church or to the charity of the
donors choice. George H. Lewis &
Sons, 101 Bering Drive at Sugar Hill
were in charge of arrangements.
Booker T. Session
Funeral for Booker T. Session of
the Elm Grove community near
Rusk was at 2 p.m. Monday in
Mount Hebron Presbyterian Chur-
ch at Rusk with the Rev, Travis
McGowan, the Rev. James Wick-
ware and the Rev. James Fuller of-
ficiating.
Burial was in Woodville
Cemetery at Rusk, with Mercy
Funeral Home of Jacksonville in
charge of arrangements.
Mr. Session died Thursday mor-
ning in a Jacksonville hospital after
an extended illness.
He was born near Rusk where he
attended church and public school.
He was a member of the Mount
Hebron Presbyterian Church where
he served as a deacon. He was a
member of Hicks Lodge No. 54 of
Rusk.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Ola Session of Rusk; three sisters.
Mrs. Laura Price of San Francisco,
Calif., Mrs. Pearlie Session and
Mrs. Artellia Tidwell of Rusk; one
brother, Fletcher Session of
Sabastpol, Calif.; and other
relatives.
Pallbearers were Milton
Christopher, Charlie Session, Carl
Sanders, Sonny Johnson, Herman
Christopher, and Ruby Christopher.
Honorary pallbearers were
elders and deacons of Mount
Hebron Presbyterian Church.
Harland Lanier
Services for Harland Lanier, 74,
Alto, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday,
April 7, in the O.T. Allen and Son
Funeral Home chapel with the Rev.
Robert J. Pade officiating.
Burial was in the Old Palestine
Cemetery near Alto.
Mr. Lanier died Friday in a
Nacogdoches hospital after a brief
illness.
He was born Nov. 15,1910, in Alto.
He was a retired chemical
operator. He was a World War II
Navy veteran and a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Monnie Lanier, Alto; one daughter,
Linda McCoy, Huffman; one
brother, Eldon Lanier, Alto; and
two grandsons, Kenny McCoy and
Andy McCoy, Huffman.
Pallbearers were Ray Todd, Jim
Wilson, Jimmy Rogers, Miller
Dickey, Robert J. Dickey, Burke
Rogers, Bruce Tunnel and William
Selman.
Paul A. Ullrich
Funeral for Paul A. Ullrich, 77, of
Rusk was held at 4 p.m. Sunday in
the Wallace-Thompson Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Glen
Winters officiating. Burial was in
Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Ullrieh died Friday in Rusk
Memorial Hospital after a brief
illness. He was born at Burlington,
Iowa and had lived in Rusk for the
past four years. He was a Baptist.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs.
Merle Ullrich of Rusk; four
daughters, Mrs. Pauline Larson of
Ahomassoa, Fla., Mrs. Norine
Jophlin of Fort Stockton, Mrs.
Janet Jenkins and Mrs. Connie
Gordon, both of Rusk; one son. Dale
L. McKaham of East Moline, 111.;
two sisters, Mrs. Mary Weinreb of
Honolulu, Hawaii and Mrs. Evelyn
McCain of Vista, Calif.; one
brother, Howard Ullrich of Calif,
and several nieces and nephews; 12
grandchildren and seven great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Terry
Beathard, James Beathard, Gary
Gordon, Alvin Jenkins, Jerry
Jophlin and John M. Kitchens.

Robert Lee Powers
Funeral for Robert Lee Powers,
75, of Rusk was held at 2 p.m. Sun-
day in the Wallace-Thompson
Funeral Home Chapel, with the
Rev. R.S. Dyess officiating.
Mr. Powers died Friday morning
in a Jacksonville hospital following
a brief illness.
A native of Nacogdoches, he had
lived at Rusk since 1941. He was
employed by AMPI, a milk
producers' cooperative. He was a
member of Eastside Baptist Church
of Rusk.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Pauline Powers of Rusk; and
several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were members of the
men's Sunday school class of East-
side Baptist Church.
