there are usually some good and
some bad characteristics. There-
fore, until more is known about
the grass in this area as to the
yields, disease resistance and
soil adaptation, our reccommend-
ation to interest cooperators is
to try only a few acres first.
Soil Conservation Service tech-
nicians states that the first thing
needed is a clean, firm seedbed.
That is necessary whether es-
tablishing from seed or roots.
It is very important when plant-
ing on old cropland fields that
the grass be fertilized heavily
and deferred from grazing so the
plants can make as much root
system as possible before the
hot, dry summer days start.
“The seed should be planted
when the soil temperature is
around 65 degrees, or cotton
planting time. They by the time
the plants are up, the weather
begins to get dry and hot. Lots
of young grass plants die be-
cause the root system is not ade-
quate to furnish the moisture
needed during the first year,"
the technician states.

Bruce Smith of Toole, a cooper-
ater with the Trinity-Neches Soil
Conservation District, establish-
ed plantings of NK-37 Bermuda
grass last year.
Gibbs and Richards planted
NK-37 in Lacy Creek bottom
after the timber had been remov-
ed by bulldozing. Smith, Hyde
and Richards planted the grass
on sandy upland soils after the
timber was removed. All five
plantings made satisfactory
growth. Naturally, the grass in
the bottom was the best, due to
the fertility level.
Cecil Chaney, work unit con-
servationist, states that NK-37
is a new variety of Bermuda that
can be established by seeding.
According to th experiment sta-
tion, trial plantings of NK-37
have produed higher yields than
common, but lower yields than
Coastal Bermuda grass.
The district supervisor states
there is a lot of interest in the
new grass. However, they pointed
out that last year’s plantings
were the first in this part of the
district As with any new grass,

Church services were well at-
tended here Sunday morning and
evening. Rev. Irby McWilliams
brought the messages. Hobbs
worshiped here Sunday night and
there were visitors from Old
Bethel.
The gully was 1800 feet long
and the upper end was eight to
10 feet deep. “It was so crooked
that it took about three or four
acres of land out of production.
The banks were so steep that I
couldn’t mow th weeds," stated
Raymond.
Soil Conservation Service tech-
nicians from the Mabank Work
Unit designed and staked a wa-
terway, which included all the
crooks of the ditch. The Kauf-
man County ASC office also as-
sisted Raymond in the shaping
and sodding. After the gully was
shaped and sloped, Raymond fer-
tilized and sodded to Bermuda
grass.
“The waterway is 100 feet
wide and 1800 feet long, which is
a little over four acres Now
there is just a depression for the
water to travel over.. And Ray-
; mond has four extra acres of
grassland that he plans to cut
for hay." stated Cecil Chaney,
work unit conservationist.
Kaufman-Van Zandt Soil Con-
servation District supervisors I
state that the eroded gullies and
tches are a problem in the
blackland. They are not only a
problem for the landowner, but
they are also a problem for the
andowners downstream. Some of
