City Lake Ball
Park To Be Set
Gerald Burgess has been
appointed by the Canton
Volunteer Fire Department to
be in charge of scheduling
nights for Canton area
baseball teams to play at the
old city lake par k.
Mr. Burgess states that five
or six teams will be using the
park. Managers of the teams
are urged to call 567-4385 and
talk to Mr. Burgess about the
night they wish to have the
park. Mr. Burgess says th t

least two trucks and one
automobile were swept off

Time Goes Into
Effect April 25
Daylight saving time will go
into effect at 2 a.m., April 25.
Residents of the area are
reminded to turn their clocks
forward one hour at this time.
The time will remain in effect
through the last Sunday of
October.
Anyone having trouble
remembering whether to turn
the clock forward or
backward an hour should
remember, spring forward,
fall backward.

acres of First Monday

water up to four feet in places.
Late Monday night, the water
had receded.
Numerous streets were
heavily damaged and one
newly built crossing on the
east side of Lake Canton, was
washed out.

Sports Banquet will be held
May 1, 8 p.m. at the school
cafetorium. Advance tickes

Cystic Fibrosis
Bike-A-Thon To
Be Held May 8
Rev. David A. Russell has
been named chairman of the
Ben Wheeler Spring Event
Campaign for the North-East
Texas Chapter of the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation.
Rev. Russell of the United
Methodist Church is planning
a Bike-a-Thon to be held on
May 8. The proceeds of the
event will support research
and care programs for
children affected by cystic
fibrosis, severe asthma and
chr onic bronchitis.
Cystic Fibrosis, the most
serious lung-da magi ng
disease, is an incurable
genetic disease, inherited
when both parents carry the
recessive cystic fibrosis gene.
It is believed that one in
twenty persons, or 10 million
Americans may carry this

Deadline Nears
May is recognize d

Month. The Van Zandt County
Committee on Aging’,
sponsored by the Governor’s
Commit tee on Aging and the
Texas Agricultural Extension
Service, is planning a number
of activities honoring the
senior citizens of Van Zandt
County. Among these
activities will be the
recognition of the outstanding
senior citizen, man and
w Oman for Van Zandt County,
Poisons wishing to submit
City of Canton will be
among most of the cities in
Van Zandt County which will
appear in hearings today
(Thursday) with the Texas
State Department of Public
Health. Canton city council
room will be the site for the
hearings with the first to
begin at 8 a.m. Canton’s
hearing will begin at 2 p.m.
The heatings are scheduled
to accept applications for the
type permit that the cities
request in a new dump ground

former County Extension
Agent-HE for Van Zandt

cities were unable to get to
their jobs Monday due to
roads being covered with
water.
Several homes and
buildings were flooded in the
area. According to Dr. John
Turner’s nurse, Mrs. Louise
Cham bless, the clinic was
flooded Monday with water
above their shoe tops. They
stopped counting the gallons
of water scooped out after
reaching a count of 100
gallons. Harry Clifford’s

Crafts Fair is scheduled for
May 6 and 7 in the Assembly
Room, courthouse basement,
Canton.
Persons wishing to
participate in the Fail must
bring their articles to the
Assembly Room. Wednesday,
May 5 from 1:00 p.m.-5:00
p.m. to enter. All articles for
sale must bt labeled with
name,address, and price. Ten
percent will be deducted
from the sale price to bolster
the club's finances
Regulations are:(l) a
person must be 55 or over to
enter. (2) There is a limit of 10
