St. Mary’s students will adopt
orphan children from the St.
Peter’s/St. Joseph’s Children’s
Home for a night of Christmas
magic at “Noche de Paz,” a St.
Mary’s Christmas Tradition.
The night begins with Las
Posadas and a candlelight proces-
sion to the residence halls across
the campus. Las Posadas is a
Mexican tradition in which two
people play Mary and Joseph in
search of a place to lodge for the
night. This journey begins in the

The city of San Antonio has
quite a bit to offer when Friday
rolls around, and attention
focuses on nocturnal recreation.
Numerous clubs and bars are
spread throughout the city, pro-
viding a variety of entertainment.
A good I.D. is a passport to a
great time on the town, to soak
up some of the local culture.
What better way to blow off

Texans — you can't live with
them, and you can't shoot them.
I’m not proud but I’ll admit it
— I was born in Texas. But I
don’t tell anybody. I didn’t stay
here long. I guess you could say I
was born running.
I moved around a lot when I
was a kid; by the time I was in the
seventh grade I had been in seven
different schools. When people
asked me what my father did, as
a joke I would tell them he was a
migrant worker. He was really in
the Army, but there isn’t much
difference. Except, that the
seasons are longer and the crops
don’t change as often.
The funniest thing about being
from Texas is coming back to
visit. Especially, when I visit my
relatives. The relatives on my,
dad’s side of the family are very
play at their functions,”
drummer, Dufilho.
“Just the other night,
music. It’s stuff that Sting can’t
play!” jokes Ramirez.
The Radsoles play mostly
smaller clubs around San An-
tonio, and have opened for acts
in Austin and in Houston. “Peo-
ple hire us for parties, and we’re
also in demand by fraternities
and sororities who want us to
Catholic. He has two sisters that
are sisters and a brother who is a
father. Figure that out. You
couldn’t walk in the house
without genuflecting or saying a
rosary. My dad came from a
small town called Edna, where
eating out meant putting on your
best boots and going to eat at a
Sonic hamburger joint.
Of course, my mom’s family
wasn’t much different. To begin
with, she’s a kook. She is the only
woman I know that wants to take
the dog to a therapist to find out
why it digs holes in the yard. I’m
so sure. I can just hear the doc-
tor: “Babe, (that’s the dog’s
name) how long have you had
this' need to dig? Do you find
'yourself preoccupied with your
paws?” Get a grip Mom. I guess
that’s what Texas did for her,
that and the fact that she grew up
in a town called Hondo.
Hondo? Don’t get me started.
I once dated a girl from Hondo
who thought that culture was go-
ing to a truck and tractor pull and
“hollerin’ at Bigfoot.” I had an
uncle from Hondo who could tell
if it was going to rain by the ex-
pressions on the chickens’ faces.
Another great example of Texan
nature of St. Mary’s.”
Students, faculty, staff, ad-
ministration and their families
are encouraged to participate in
this pre-Christmas celebration.
Other planned activities are a
Christmas concert presented by
the music department, a
candlelight mass in Guadalupe
Chapel, and a film, “Miracle on
34th Street,” in Treadaway
Auditorium.

THE SONG OF
NIGHTINGALES
The other two recently ac-
quired members, Ramirez and
Dufilho, were previously in a
band known as “Mirrored Vi-
sions.”
The Radsoles are an unlikely
group, with backgrounds as
diverse as U2 and the Ramones,
to old Punk and Country music.
“We depend on our diversity
as musicians to form a unique
synthesis not easily categorized.
It’s a sound that generally ap-
peals to everyone, says lead
guitarist, Ramirez.
The band performs mostly
originals, with a few covers. The
originals such as “Where You
Lie” and “1983” feature almost

one member said.
The band is going into the
studio this month to work on a
demo tape, but still hopes to per-
form some live shows, which they
prefer.
“I guess the message that we
try to get out in our shows is that
we’re professionals, so don’t try
this at home,” Justice said.
Professionals or not, the Rad-
soles provide some excellent
entertainment for anyone who
likes to dance, or just kick back
with a cold one and relax. It’s a
highly recommended form of
relieving stress and anxiety
brought on by college life. So
check ’em out.

ingenuity.
I will give Texans one thing,
they have got to be the hardest of
all small-brained animals to
figure out.
I once met a guy from
Beeville who had to be the best
example of small town Texas. He
was the kind of Texan who had
traveled outside of Texas a few
times; so immediately he was an
expert on the world. This guy
would tell me all the time, “It
sure does get cold in Texas. Up
where I live we wear sweaters
straight through July.”
“Really,” I would say keeping
my laughter to myself, “do you
get much snow up there?” He
would reply, “Snow? Snow?!?
Boy, sometimes we get three,
maybe four inches in one day.
Course, it don’t stay more than
an hour, but it sure does bring the
cold.” Yeah.
Well, by now you could say
that my relatives and Texans have
the same mentality. You’re pro-
bably right. But as one proud
Texan put it: “If you didn’t have
us Texans to laugh at, you
wouldn’t laugh at all.” Isn’t that
just like a Texan to take credit for
the world’s laughter?
