Dr. Leon Lederman, scientist, educator, and 1988 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics, is a renowned
communicator and lecturer who employs his steady sense of humor and wonder of the world to make the
study of physics and other sciences more accessible to the general public.
Lederman served as the Director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory from 1979 to 1989 where
he managed a myriad of “cutting edge” research projects, from the structure of the atom, to theories about
the beginnings of the universe.
He is currently the Pritzer Professor of Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology and co-chairman
of the Teachers Academy for Mathematics and Science in Chicago. He previously served as the Frank L.
Sulzberger Professor of Physics at the University of Chicago (1989-1991), and Professor of Physics at
Columbia University (1958-1989).
Lederman’s impressive list of awards include: 1992 Enrico Fermi Award (the U.S. government’s oldest
science and technology award); 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics; 1982 Wolf Prize in Physics; and 1965
National Medal in Science.
A major concern of Lederman’s is the state of science education in the United States. He is one of the
nation’s most outspoken advocates for educational reform and rethinking the ways we teach our children,
especially in math and science. Among his accomplishments, he established one of the most innovative
programs that, retrain teachers and modernize their teaching methods.
