What took so long?

EDITOR In Chief
Our readers deserve an explanation for the reason The Rattler was
delayed from publication.
Due to the controversies that lingered over the staff last semester,
the administration decided to clean house and start anew. The
Rattler's upcoming issues will fuse high quality writing with inter-
esting layout. With old and new staff, The Rattler will be a mosaic of
our student body.
There were stories that ran last year that changed the public's
general attitude towards our newspaper. Stories on topics that
shocked rather than enticed change or educated the readers.
Dean of Students and Publication Board Chair Karen Johnson has
been unable to dedicate much time this semester to the paper.
However, last month she hired former Editor in Chief Amanda
Jones as the student adviser and myself as Editor in Chief to resur-
rect The Rattler.
Staff hiring, interviews, computer problems and meetings have
come and gone, making our team stronger and more fervent to get
the job done well.
We know the entire university community is watching us to see if
we make mistakes, get some fact wrong or run something too con-
troversial. However, I also know that many of our readers will be
content with the fact that The Rattler is back and ready to help the
students get their voice out.
I know it took four months to get this issue into your hands, but
hopefully it was worth the wait.
A month after rebuilding, here we are, presenting the premiere
issue of what will hopefully turn into a regular part of your St.
Mary's University life.
Our staff is varied and from all different years and backgrounds.
I want to clarify to the entire community that The Rattler this time
around will be stable and grow to serve the students.
Our goals are to follow the canons of responsible journalism, be
fair and unbiased, help the students and community-at-large, follow
Associated Press guidelines and become one of the most respected
college newspapers in our region.
Margaret Luevano, coordinator of international student services,
and interim publication board chair and our brand new adviser
Lucy Poludniak have both helped us get up and running again.
I appreciate everyone's support on this project and we will con-
tinue to need support if we want our paper to rise back to the top.
With your support, The Rattler will thrive. Write to us, call us, e-
mail us and tell us what you think we should know.
The floor is open, especially on this page, to what the St. Mary's
University community wants to read, discuss and learn about.
Thank you.
