In order to make the University
community more knowledgeable
about the evacuation of the Main
Building, President Stephen Walsh
has issued a memorandum on the
situation.
Walsh says, “. . . It is not merely
for cosmetic reasons or for conven-
ience sake that we are making the
move. It is quite possible, for in-
stance, that even when the building
is evacuated, it will be necessary to
shore up sections of the building if
the renovation is delayed too long.”
According to the memo, the fol-
lowing actions have been taken to
accommodate those who will have

Bounous, who is coordinating the
fair, urged all students who plan to
attend to bring their resumes, since
so many businesses will be rep-
resented.
“We have encouraged the em-
ployers to come only if they have
jobs to fill, not just for visibility,”
she said.
It’s hard to characterize the kinds
of jobs that will be available,” she
added. “We have attempted to
have companies come to meet the
needs of our students, so they (the
jobs) go the whole range of our ma-
jors.”
Companies and agencies signed
up to participated in the fair include
Advanced Micro Devices, Austin
Area Urban League, Austin Inde-
pendent School Distrct, Austin
Police Department, Brown Schools,
Capital Area Planning Commis-
sion, Boy Scouts of America, the

pital) and this will provide ap-
proximately 5000 additional
square feet.”
According to Walsh, the renova-
tion of the Main Building is es-
timated to cost $2.5 million or
about $59 per square foot. “This
includes replacing all the floors and
constructing what will be essentially
an entirely new building on the in-
terior.”
Walsh also addressed the subject
of the recreation/convocation cen-
ter. The center is projected to cost
about $5 million at today’s cost.

Almost 30 businesses and govern-
mental agencies, all with jobs to of-
fer, will participate in a Career and
Job Fair, April 19, in the Moody
Hall Atrium.
A wide range of job opportuni-
ties will be available at the fair,
which will run from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m.
Campus organizations co-
sponsoring the event include the
Student’s Association, Inc., (SAI)
and the Job Bank, Internship,
Career Planning and Placement,
and Veterans Upward Bound
(VUB) programs.
The fair is aimed at graduating
seniors, but students looking for
part-time jobs may also attend, ac-
cording to Ruth Bounous, director
of Career Planning and Placement
and the internship programs.
