In their last games of the
regular season, the Toppers
defeated Huston-Tillotson
soundly (15-4, 15-1, 15-0), beat
Concordia (14-16, 15-9, 17-15,
2-15,15-10) and lost to St. Mary’s
(14-16, 7-15, 10-15).
Johnson has really come along,”
said Pate. “He has really been an
excellent jumper and rebounder.”
Mike Ledbetter and Greg Meyers
have also impressed Pate. Ledbetter
“is shooting well and is improving
his defense”, and Meyers “is hand-
ling the ball well,” said Pate.
The biggest weakness that has
been demonstrated so far is the lack
of overall quickness, especially at
the guard position said Pate.
“We can’t get enough pressure
on the ball,” said Pate. This makes
things easier for the opposing
guards who aren’t as distracted by
defensive pressure, thereby freeing
them to concentrate on finding the
open man. “We’ll continue to work
on it,” said Pate.
Player: Pam Dilworth
Hometown: Austin, TX
High School: Del Valle High
Sport: Volleyball
Height: 5’8”
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology
Pam Dilworth spent the entire 12
years of her public education in the
Del Valle school district. Because
the Del Valle district also educates
children of Air Force personnel
from the nearby Bergstrom base,
there were many changes from year
to year. “It was like going to three
different schools,” Dilworth said of
the changes that took place between
elementary, junior high and high
school. “They (Air Force depen-
dents) rarely graduated,” she said.
“They stayed a couple years and
left.” This no doubt helped to keep
things interesting as the years went
by.
What made life more interesting
for Dilworth were her volleyball
and basketball experiences. Her
volleyball team reached the state
semi-finals during Dilworth’s junior
year. In her senior year, the Del
Valle team went undefeated all
season but lost in the regional com-
petition.
It was Dilworth’s high school
career in basketball that brought
her closest to fame and fortune,
however. Dilworth started on the
Del Valle basketball team that won
the state championship during her
senior year. “I was interviewed on
Channel 7!” she said.
That title-winning Del Valle team
had a reputation of playing with
more physical zeal than the rules
allowed, but Dilworth doesn’t buy
it.
“We weren’t mean,” she said in
an insistent tone. “You have to play

Head Coach John Knorr uses
the World Series to evaluate
players whom he hasn’t seen
play college-level ball. During
this year’s Series, which went
the full 11 games for the first
time in four years, many young
players impressed the coach.
“Jim Shelton pitched con-
sistently; Mike Olson and Greg
Trilicek hit the ball well,” said
Knorr.
Other players who drew atten-
tion from Knorr included Robby
Garza, Steve Burg and Ralph
Martinez.
Fall practice for the Topper
baseball team ended with the
Series. Baseball action will
begin again in February.

One of the biggest problems the
Toppers will face is the number of
road games at the beginning of the
season. “It’s going to take a lot of
perseverance to keep playing well
on the road,” said Pate.
Before January, when conference
play begins, the Toppers have seven
road games and only four home
games. This figure does not include
two tournaments in which the Top-
pers will appear - the Sul Ross
Classic in Alpine and the Howard
Payne Classic in Brownwood.
The key to surviving our
murderous schedule is what the
players are made of, said Pate. “I
think they’re the kind of young men
who’ll be able to represent SEU
well.”

rough when you want to win. You
have to take because they’re not go-
ing to give you anything. We didn’t
play dirty, we just played hard.”
Dilworth didn’t carry her basket-
ball playing skills to the hilltop,
however. “Basketball isn’t my
sport,” she said. “I wouldn’t give
100%, and that would be a letdown
to the coach and the team.”
Dilworth came to St. Edward’s
for three reasons: one, because it is
small and I knew I’d learn a lot;
two, I like the care the faculty gives
the students; and three,
volleyball!”
Dilworth hopes to become a
physical therapist after her gradua-
tion. “I have my health,” she said.
“Volleyball gives me a very positive
attitude about myself and my abil-
ities, and what I’m capable of do-
ing. I’d like to have the feeling that
I can help somebody adjust.”
Dilworth will have an extended
opportunity to gain this positive
reinforcement from volleyball this
year because the 1983-84 Topper
team is playoff bound.
“I just want to get to (the NAIA
tournament) Kansas City,” she
said, adding that the team has to
communicate and keep a positive
attitude to get there.

Strengths and weaknesses on this
year’s men’s basketball team are
showing up in preseason play.
Head Coach Tom Pate said “the
team’s attitude is excellent. They
work really hard and seem to get
along really well. We have a lot of
guys on the team; anytime you have
that, you have a chance to win.”
Another strength so far is
shooting, said Pate. Stuart Schultz,
Chris Collins and Jerry Farias have
been impressive. “DeNell Davis
and Gus Benson have looked as
good as anybody,” said Pate.
The freshman are also turning in
good performances. “James
