Back Injury Sidelines Superstar
Leroy Nicholas Out for the Season

As a junior, Nicholas received All
Conference honors for his efforts at
center. This season he recorded back
to back All-Tourney performances in
the Stephenville and Georgetown In-
vitationals. What’s more, he played
side by side with the talented DeNell
Davis and it looked as though this sea-
son would provide us with a left-right
punch never before seen at St. Ed-
ward’s. “Leroy was clearly one of the
best players in conference,” claimed
teammate DeNell Davis, “We’ll never
really know how good we could have
been if he would have stayed healthy.”
The tandem of Davis and Nicholas
seemed to be unstoppable with their

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thor-
oughly enjoying the success of this
years men’s team. But when I look out
on the court for number 23 and can’t
find him, a certain emptyness is felt.
Without Leroy, it’s just not the same.
what he meant to this team.” But
Nicholas hasn’t laid down and died. In
fact he is just as involved with the bas-
ketball team now as he was when he
was playing. “He is at every practice
and watches all the game film with
us,” says Pate. “He is a class individ-
ual and his personality is such that he
has taken the whole ordeal in stride.
Sure, maybe we lost his skills on the
court, but his spirit and enthusiasm
are still there and in that sense, he has
contributed significantly to our suc-
cess this season.”
game pressure better than he. Who
could ever forget the St. Mary’s game
a year ago when he turned in one of
the most memorable performances in
St. Edward’s history? And when was 4
the last time a player was carried off
the court on the shoulders of jubilant 1
fans? Yes, Leroy Nicholas could
create excitement like no other.

will throw out the first softball of the
season.
So although some of the aforemen-
tioned exotic sports will not occupy
our spring slate, the intramural sports
program will still offer your classic
events along with the addition of floor
hockey, which may prove to be one of
the years most popular sports. And
sports is what intramurals are all
about at St. Edward’s. They’re sports
for sport, as well as exercise, friendly
competition, fun, and laughs.
Don’t be a closet case this spring.
Get a roster, get a team, shelve the
books for couple of hours and get in-
volved in sports. You don’t have to be a
fantastic athlete, superjock or a Brian
Senn type. You just need to be a guy
or girl who wants to have some fun,
get some sun, and meet some great
people. Well, the cliches are endless
so I’ll crawl down off my soapbox.
This sermon is over. I’ll see you in the
gym or on the field.

To an athlete, especially a college
athlete, being a senior not only means
graduation is right around the corner,
it means you have one last opportunity
to show fans and teammates what
you’re capable of. It is hopefully the
year that all the skills you’ve learned,
both mental and physical, come to-
gether. For senior basketball sensation
Leroy Nicholas, this was undoubtedly
the case. After the first 10 games this
season, Nicholas led the Hilltoppers
in scoring, as well as rebounding, and

styles complimenting each other like
meat and potatoes. As individuals,
they were all district candidates, to-
gether, they were totally dominant.
But again, the back injury to Nicholas
changed all of this. And as Davis con-
tinues to play superbly, Nicholas has
turned cheerleader and avid supporter.
But that’s just Leroy, he’s not the type
to go around feeling sorry for himself.
You would have had to see him in
action to totally appreciate his ath-
letic skills. Always cool and sports-
manlike; no one could handle big

St. Edward’s fans looked to him as
their ticket to the Nationals. A back
injury, however, has changed all of
this. Although it still looks like the
Toppers are on the road to the play-
offs, they will be forced to drive that
road without Nicholas.
A reoccurring back pain after
games and practices prompted him to
consult a specialist. After a series of
tests, it was revealed that Nicho-
las had a ruptured disc in his lower
back and even though it wouldn’t re-
quire surgery, it would require that he
hang up his sneakers and leave behind
his senior season. “I feel terrible for
him,” explained coach Tom Pate, “I

The arrival of the second semester,
although fraught with many prob-
lems, concerns, and difficulties is also
the perveyor of a brand new intra-
mural sports season. And, even
though I am the intramural beat re-
porter, I am completely devoid of bias
whe I say that the spring sports season
is hot. Just take a gander at this
lineup: men’s, as well as women’s, bas-
ketball, the first annual floor hockey
tournament, 8-ball pool tourney,
backgammon, tennis, men’s and
women’s softball, the 100th annual co-
recreational tournament, big game
hunting, intramural yachting races,
lumberjack logging contest, roller-
ball, stock car racing, mountain
climbing, etc. The list is endless, but
due to budgetary limitations our sea-
son must end with the 100th Annual
Co-Rec Softball Tournament. But it
has been rumored that James Koch
