New readers of the 11-year-old Colony Courier
have an opportunity in this column to glance back a
few years and see what was happening in the area
“In yesteryear.”
Items in the column come from the news files of
the Courier and the old Little Elm Tide that began
covering the Colony before the first families moved
into the city’s Fox & Jacobs homes late in 1974.

each other—can be a great
way to spend time together.
One man in Illinois says his
daughters play MLB so much
that he can’t play unless he
challenges them to a game or
waits until they go to bed!
MLB made its debut in 1984,
when the World Series opener
between the Tigers and the
Padres was simulated on com-
puter before the game was
actually played. The Tigers’
3-1 victory on computer was
strikingly similar to the real
3-2 Tiger win the next day.
Today, “Micro Leagues” can
be found all over the country.
People pit teams from the
past or present against one
another, replay classic match-
ups, or even put together
their “dream teams” using the
General Manager/Owner’s disk
There’s even an MLB news-
letter and a 1-800-PLAYBAL
hotline for information. The
game allows for play on many
levels—from the person who
just enjoys the challenge of
managing a favorite team to
the die-hard fan who recreates
entire seasons down to the
last detail.

You: an armchair athlete?
Someone who’s often felt you
could do a better job at man-
aging your favorite baseball
team than the professionals?
Here’s a chance to test your
true abilities.
A new computer game has
scored a hit with baseball
buffs across the nation. Now
available is the second ver-
sion of the top-selling, award-
winning home computer game,
Micro League Baseball. The
only such game endorsed by
Major League Baseball and
the Players Association, Micro
League Baseball (MLB) is an
exciting baseball simulation
that uses real players and
their statistics, and puts the
control of managing the team
in the hands of the players.
What has made MLB such
a hit (over 100,000 copies
sold), is all the features that
make it like real baseball. In-
juries, arguments with the
umpire, rain delays, pinch
hitters, pitchers in the
bullpen, stadium dimensions,
and player ratings, to name a
few—all affect the outcome of
the game. The detailed com-
puter graphics make players
feel like they’re at a real
ballpark. There’s also a quick
play option where the com-
puter plays the whole game
in just one minute and shows
a full box score.
Many family members, of
all age groups, find that play-
ing in leagues—with or against
