Petty-Herring vows
are said at Alto church
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Petty
Aahley Dawn Herring, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Herring of
Kusk and Roy Brandon Petty, son
of Mr. and Mre. David Petty of Alto
were married Dec. 20, 1991, in the
Alto First Assembly of Qod Church.
The Rev. Gerald Hooks officiated
for the beautiful double ring cere-
mony performed before a Christ-
mas tree decorated in red, green
and white and topped with a large
red bow. Red Poinsettias were used
throughout the church in decora-
tions. Family pewB were marked
with red and green bows.
Karen Yberra sang "Miracle in
the Making." Other music included
the Bridal March and Recessional
Wedding March and Garth Brooks
.song "If Tomorrow Never Comes."
Given in marriage by her father,
the bride wore a tea length dresB of
white satin featuring an open neck-
line edged in imported lace. The
fitted basque bodice was appliqued
with lace. The lovely gown featured
Bhort puffed sleeves with appliqued
lace. The gathered tea length skirt
was decorated at the back waist
with a ruffled lace bustle highlighted
by a large satin bow. Her waist
length wedding veil of white tulle
- and pearls fell from a large poof and
a V-shapped band with pearls and
dangling pearls.

With the holidays over, and cold,
rainy weather, folks in our town are
pretty much staying put. So, in lieu
of who is coming and going, I am
going to put down here, some
thoughts on what I will call, staying
home activities. And, more precisely,
in praise of VCRs.
As my friends know, I do not have
a roof TV antenna, a satellite has
nev^r fit into my entertainment
bu^et, and living in the country for
six years, my TV viewing has been
limited to the Tyler TV station and
the LufkinTV station, both of which
bring into my home, the same ABC
affiliate programs. CBS and NBC
have been strangers to me since my
defection to the country life in 1986.
But, I am an expert on anything
at ABC has televised in that time
Just ask me alibiing you wanáo '
low about the sequence of events
on the now defunct Thirty something,
or, Cheers reruns. How many times
did Sam propose to Diane in the
years from 1985 to 1988when Kirsty
Alley took over on that show? If you
want to remember a significant story
from20-20in the last couple of years,
call and ask me..Tve not missed
that show on a Friday night either.
On Thursday nights, if you want to
know what they featured on Prime
Time the third week of November of
last year, I can probably fill you in
on that, too.
Two of the best new ABC shows
this season, I highly recommend to
you are Civil Wars and The Com-
mish. I think I am drawn to this last
one for the wonderful, truly authen-
tic, New Yawk accents! I feel like I
am back home. (Probably the very
worst accent in all of America. I
have always been glad, that I shed
mine, over the years. Now, a Boston
accent, that I can handle.) But, I
digress. I am supposed to be writing
about VCRs.
There once was a time that I
thought my microwave oven was
the best of all possible new inven-
tions of this century. I no longer
had to boil water on the stove to
make a cup oftea. And the 5 minute
baked potato was the best of all
available "easy dinners."
But after three years in the coun-
try in the company of only my dog
and ABC, I came to discover the
wonderful world of VCRs. I was
given an old one by some friends
who had bought themselves a newer
model.
And then the wonder began. Low
and behold, instead of having to
watch Monday night football, I could
actually sit and see "The Muppets
Take Manhatten" from my local
video store. (Can I help it, I happen
to be a muppet fan...bo call me
ntftty.j And then, on Tuesday
nights, either before or after Thir-
ty something I could watch an Indi-
ana Jones movie. Any one of them I
chose to rent. One day at a garage
sale I picked up a copy of "Star
Wars" one of my all-time favorite
movies. So, rather than sit an fuss
over "Rosearme" I can pull out a
video from my now-growing collec-
tion and watch whatever I happen
to be in the mood to see.
And the grandbabies.. .when they
are here (as they were last week
and perhaps that is what has in-
spired me to write this) what would
we do without the VCR? They can
sit and watch "The Rescuers Down
Under'' for the umpteenth time and
still not be bored. Even the baby, 15
months old, looks enthralled as the
little mice are transported in the
air by the wonderful, huge, funny
Albatross with the voice of John
Caddy.
But now I am facing a choiceless
void of the mtyorTV networks that
threatens my every-four-years of

anticipation for one ofthe few sports
events I adore. For the first time
ever, ABC will not be carrying the
Winter Olym pics, Sniff, sniff, sob. I
read somewhere, last year, that it
has gotten too expensive for ABC
and CBS has bought rights to tele-
vise them. A major disaster for me
and my limited access to the world of
TV. Picture if you will, a football fan
suddenly di scovering that his TV set
will not bring in the Super Bowl!
That would rattle some cages, 111
bet.
What to do? I mean you are read-
ing the writing of a real Winter
Olympic FAN. Here is a girl who
skated in the same Olympic stadi um
at Lake Placid, N.Y. only one year
after Sorya Henie won a gold medal
there. (I won't tell you the year.)
Here you have a little girl who
learned to ski about the time «he
learned to walk. A girl who'B Daddy
won the World Championship Bob
Sled race in Switzerland, the year
before it was part of the Winter
Olympics. Up until that time the of-
ficials deemed the sport too danger-
ous! A girl who went bobsledding on
her honeymoon, for goodness sakes!
And you wonder why I adore the
Winter Olympics and am going into
a frenzy at the thought of not glueing
myself to the TV for the 16 days of
this once every-four-year-event? I
have been known to unplug my
phones while the skating champion-
ships were being shown in past
Olympics. But wait, there just may
be an answer here.
I have cast my woes to several
friends who happen to have both a
VCR and CBS. And, guess what,
they have kindly offered to either (A)
Have me over the night that the
Olympics are on (they start Feb. 8)
or (B) To tape the events for me for
posterity. So, I am busy buying up
blank tapes and reviewing my op-
tions.
Who knows, the nights I cannot be
actually watching the live Winter
Olympics, I just might be gazing at
"Magic Moments on lee" my very
own video of Three Decades of Great
Moments in Figure Skating, while
off in some distant place, a friend is
taping for me, my great moments in
the 16th Winter Olympics and
through the magic of my VCR I can
replay over and over and over...

Math-A-Thon
slated in Alto
By... JENNIFER DEAXMAN
Over the next few weeks you may
be approached by an Alto Junior
High Student asking you to spon-
sor them in the Math-A-Thon pro-
gram sponsored by St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital. Help
to encourage their participation in
this worthwhile cause. Why?
•Math-A-Thon is designed to
strengthen the student's m'áth skill
by providing free materials which
supplement their basic curriculum.
• Cancer kills more children than
' any other disease. St. Jude's
children's Research Hospital is the
largest childhood cancer research
hospital in the world and its pur-
pose is to provide both medical
treatment for desperately ill chil-
dren, and research that will per-
manently wipe out childhood can-
cer and other catastrophic diseases.
By seeking sponsors, the student
and the sponsors, will be helping
other children not so lucky in their
deadly battle with childhood can-
cer.
If you would like to sponsor a
child in this program or make a
donation and no one has contacted
you, please contact Jennifer Dear-
man at (409) 858-3355 between
1:40-2:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
Thank you for your willingness to
help us with this excellent program
and very worthy cause.
