I have thought for several years
of running for the Board When 1
was recent ly asked to run I knew it
was time to serve. 1 want totakean
active role in the education of all of
our children; to assist in shaping
their curriculum and tobe involved
in long-range planning for educa-
tion in this district. I believe the
Board has a duty to maximize edu-
cational opportunities for all of our
children while insuring that tax-
pavers get the best value far their
dollar. ;
I am a native East Texan, liaving
been raised in Mt. Enterprise and
graduating from Henderson High
School I received degrees from
Kilgore College and Baylor Univer-
sity prior to graduat ing from Baylor
Law School in 1981.
In 1978,1 married my high school
sweetheart, Connye Poovey. Our
son, Chris, was born in 1984, and is
a third grader at Rusk Elementary.
1 have practiced law in Rusk since
1981 when I moved here to join the
law firm of Norman, Spiers, Thrall,
Angle & Rountree. Since 1984, I
have been managing partner of that
firm, which is now known as,
Norman, Thrall, Angle, Guy & Wil-
liams.
My family and I are members of
First Baptist Church in Rusk where
1 serve as a deacon. 1 am president-
elect for t he Rusk Chamber of Com-
merce and Chairman of the Chero-
Steven It. Cuy
kee County Industrial Commission.
1 serve on the Board of Directors for
the Chamber, Rusk Make-It-Hap-
pen, Inc., N an Travis Memorial Hos-
pital Foundation, Rusk Industrial
Foundation, and Cherokee County
Industrial Commission I am, also,
a member of the American and Texas
Bar Associations, Cherokee County
Bar Association, plus other profes-
sional groups,
RISD school board election will
take place on Saturday, May 7 at
the SESCO offices in downtown
Rusk. Early voting begins April 18
at the RISD Superintendent's Of-
fice at 203 E. 7th Street, Rusk.

reaches mid-point in season
THE ENGAGEMENT OF CHRISTINA LYNN BIAS to
Lawrence Alan Woodcock, both of League City, is
announced. The couple plans a May 28th wedding at
the Friends Church in Friendswood. The bride-elect,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Gentry of League City and
Mr. 8c Mrs. Steve Bias of LaMarque, is a graduate of
Clear Creek High School and attended College of Main-
land. The future bridegroom, son of Mr. & Mrs. Larry
Woodcock of Rusk, is a graduate of Lamar University
and Clear Creek Hi£h School.

T. H. AND UVAUGHN GOFF celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary April 8. They were married
April 8, 1944, at Maydelle by the Rev. Eugene
Roach. The Goffs have one son, Darrell Goff. They
are retired. Mrs. Goff retired from Cherokee county
Precinct 1 with 42 years and Mrs. Goff from Rusk

lowing cases were worked by the
Alto Police Department and the
Cherokee County Sheriffs Depart-
ment:
Two theft cases, eight disturbance
calls, five 911 calls, five school alarm
calls, four downtown alarm calls,
eight funeral assists, two traffic ac-
cidents, 89 traffic violations, four
city ordinances, three minor in pos-
session alcoholic beverage, six dis-
orderly conduct, 13 arrests.

Senior David Crysup lead the ball
club in hits, batting 3-3; a double
and two singles. Ronnie Gates was
3-4; a double and two singles. Craig
Ballew hit two singles, and Aaron
Birdwell and Adam Halbert each
had a single.

The council approved Texas Mu-
nicipal League's Cobra Administra-
tion Agreement. Under this agree-
ment, if a city employee quits or
retires he or she will be protected by
the insurance, if it is taken. The
insurance is high and usually not
taken by the city employees, but it
has to be offered.
The proclamation to designate the
week of April 16-23,1994 as "Week
of the Young Child," was approved.
And direct phone service to Lufkin
for one designated business phone
was also approved.
The city agreed to provide $5
apeice to the two reserve officers
who drive from Lufkin and
Nacogdoches, in order to help with
gas in their cars each day that they
are on duty. Chris Shadowens is of
Lufkin and James Huffty ia from
Nacogdoches. The reserves are
qualified officers who have gradu-
ated from the Police Acadamy and
are interning with the Alto Police
Department while continuing their
education.
Following regular session, coun-
cil members retired into executive
session in compliance with Article
6252-17 Section 2-E, Vernon'aTexas
Civil Statutes. However no action
was taken.
