The McKinney Lions played
catch-up for 39 minutes and 45
seconds of their game with the
Bonham Warriors Friday night
at Bonham before Reserve Half-
back James Morton pounced on
a Warrior fumble on the Bon-
ham 1-yard line and Quarterback
Ronnie Smith blasted over on a
sneak for the game-winning tal-
ly with 8:15 left in the final per-
iod. The win left McKinney with
a 4-0 district record.
The McKinney q u a r t e rback
scored three touchdowns on runs
of 7, 24 and 1 yards and com-
pleted a 59-yard pass and run
play to Phillip Smith for the
fourth. Tackle Ted Robinson
kicked all four conversions.
Two touchdowns in 55 seconds
of the fourth quarter clinched
victory for McKinney. Trailing
14-21 with 9:10 left in the game,
Ronnie Smith heaved a perfect
pass to Phillip Smith who took
the ball on the Bonham 40 and
outran his pursuers the rest of
the way to the goal. Robinson’s
conversion tied the score at 21-
all. The McKinney kick-off
bounded to the Warrior 1-yard
line where Halfback Johnny
Baker fumbled and Morton re-
covered for the Lions to set up
the game-winning score. Full-
back Mike Cain, who rambled 64
yards on 14 carries to lead the
Lions’ ground game, hit the cen-
ter of the line for half a yard
and, one the next play, Ronnie
Smith blasted into the middle,
bounced off a bevy of Warriors,
and then veered to his left to
dive over the pile for the mark-
er.
Bonham opened the scoring
with 4:20 left in the first period
when Halfback Cramer Biggers
took a Lion punt on his own 30
and raced 70 yards for the touch-
down. End Mike Southerland
kicked the first of his three con-
versions.
Midway in the second the
Lions went 52 yards in 5 plays
to knot the count at 7-all with a
pass from Ronnie Smith “to End
Keith Sullivan getting 41 yards
and Halfback Charles McKissick
driving for 15 more to put the
ball on the 7 from where Ron-
nie Smith swept left end for the
score.
With 3:20 left in the third,
Fullback Leslie Spoon drove
through the middle from the 1 to
score for Bonham after a 74-yard
drive that needed 13 plays. •
McKinney caught up again
with 32 seconds left in the period
when they drove 66 yards in 8
plays to count. Ronnie Smith
went over right tackle for 24
yards for this one.

Allen Eagles
Beat Bells,
Win Title
The Allen Eagles, facing a 13-
point deficit, scored twice in the
fourth period at Bells Friday
night to beat the Panthers 16-13
and wrap up the championship
of District 12-B in their first sea-
son of 11-man football.
Coach Max Vaughan’s Eagles,
perennial champions in 6- and 8-
man football for many years,
joined 11-man ranks only this
fall.
Harold Henderson went 45
yards for Allen’s first final-per-
iod touchdown and Bill Day
scored from the 2 for the other.
Day passed to Ted Bryson for
one conversion and carried over
for another.
Bells built up a 13-point lead
on touchdowns by Jerry Roland
who scored after a 5-yard scamp-
er in the first quarter and by
Jimmy Francis who went 5 yards
for another in the third. Francis’
score was set up when his team-
mates recovered an Eagle fumble
on the Allen 5. Jackie Young
converted after the first Bells
touchdown.
The Eagles, who finished the
season with an 8-1-1 record, will
play either Alvord or Aledo in
the bi-district round of play-offs,
Coach Vaughan said Wednesday.
Aledo and Alvord meet at Al-
vord Friday night with the cham-
pionship of District 11-B riding
on the outcome. The bi-district
game will be played next week,
the time and place to be determ-
ined at a meeting of officials fol-
lowing Friday night’s contest.
Allen’s lone loss this season
was to Class A Frisco. They were
tied by Wolfe City.
Coach Vaughan said it is
doubtful that one of his regulars,
Richard Chumbley, who was
hurt in the Bells game Friday
night, will be able to play again
this season. He added, however,
that Chumbley will undergo a
physical examination later to de-
termine his fitness before a fin-
al decision is made.
