Anna to Have
Dial Telephones ♦
March 11th
Anna’s new dial telephone
switching system will go in
service at 6 a. m. March 11.
At the same time all Anna tele-
phone numbers will change to
two letters and five numerals.
The new equipment will re-
place the old dial switching sys-
tem now in service in Anna.
“This will mean even better
telephone service for Anna resi-
dents,” Roland Abbott, manager
for Southwestern Bell Telephone
Company, said.
Telephone directories listing
the new numbers for Anna will
be mailed March 8, Abbott said.
All Anna telephone numbers
will have a WAlnut 4 prefix.
“The new two-letter, five num-
eral numbering system will
make telephone numbers here
conform with the standard na-
tion-wide numbering plan which
is designed to increase the speed

and efficiency of Hng distance
telephone service,” Abbott said.
The United States and Canada
are divided into long distance
dialing areas. Each area is iden-
tified by a three-digit code. An-
na, Ike McKinney, is in the 214
area. No telephone number in
this area can be duplicated,
which is another reason for the
two-letter, five numeral number-
ing system, the telephone com-
pany manager explained.
“If an Anna or McKinney cus-
tomer places 214 in front of his
telephone number, he has his
own long distance telephone
number. It is not duplicated any-
where in the United States or
Canada,” Abbott said.
