The Decathlon is a scholastic com-
petition for ninth through 12th grade
students designed to encourage and
recognize outstanding performance
in school pursuits that require intel-
lectual rather than physical superi-
ority, said Lee Meyers, state direc-
tor of the Academics Decathlon.
The Decathlon started in Califor-
nia as a local competition in 1968
and is now conducted worldwide.
Texas entered the national competi-
tion for the first time in 1984. Texas
hosted the national competition in
1987 and 1988. Since that time many
states have hosted the competition.
Texas won the national competition
eight out of 12 years, placed second
twice and third twice. The 1996com-

SPECIAL TO THE CHEROKEEAN/HERALD
Tom and Ronnie Lake agree that*
their trip from northern California
to East Texas was a total nightmare
from beginning to end. Their depar-
ture was scheduled for Nov. 3; they
were unable to leave until Nov. 7.
They were constantly detained by
one thing or another all the long
way.
They were stuck in Ludlow, Calif.,
for two days when the trailer tires
blew out. In Needles, Calif., they
had overheating problems with the
truck where they were forced to lay
over for three days.
In Phoenix, Ariz., they had to re-
place the water pump, a 24 hour
delay. There was an eight-hour
holdup at Big Springs when it be-
came necessary to replace a truck
tire. Just outside Abilene, more good
newB. The radiator began to leak,
making it necessary to spend the
night there. The truck continued to
overheat the remainder of the way.
Tom spent a lot of time in electron-
ics in the aerospace industry. He
was a senior test engineer for the
guidance system of the MX missile.
Tom has been medically termed as
disabled since his stroke about a
year and a half ago. But he hasn't let
this get the best of him. He wrote a
series of articles for a newspaper
giving information for selecting and
using computers. And he is hoping
to be able to continue this work for a
newspaper in this area.
Ronnie was a security guard for a
private club prior to Tom's disabil-
ity. She now spends most of her time
helping with her husband's therapy,
doing household chores and taking
care of her grandchildren, who live
next door while their daughter,
Tammy Mathes, works.
The Lakes left a daughter and son
and their families in California. Their
son Tommy and his wife, Tatiana,
came here with them. Tom's mom
and dad and a brother live in
Hawkins.
Ronnie and Tom lived on a 30-acre
walnut and almond ranch. Ronnie
remarked that it was like "earth-
quake city" when the trees were
harvested by shakers.
"A trip that should have taken
three days took us a total of 19, long,
weary days," Tom remarked. "But
we think it will be worth it."
If you are a newcomer to this area,
or know someone who is, please call
me at (903) 743-5427giving a name
and telephone number. I will contact
them and deliver a Welcome Packet
to all new residents, complements of
participating businesses who wish
to welcome them to Rusk, the friend-
liest little city in East Texas!
