Not since the middle and late
1960s have college students been
influential in politics...until the
last general election of 1984.
College students have again
shown that they are willing to
take an interest in national and
international affairs. But what is
this screaming about “Isn’t the
university the place and the time
to open our minds to many issues
and ideas?”
The problem lies in your point
of view. university students, in

Dear Editor,
There has been a great deal of
controversy recently concerning
the Central Intelligence Agency
coming on campus and trying to
recruit college students.
I think that we at St. Mary's
have a responsibility not to
harass these people simply be-
cause we don't understand or
agree with their policies in the
Third World.
If Proctor and Gamble began
recruiting high-paying executive
jobs, I don’t think they would
receive the same treatment as
the CIA, yet many people on
campus disagree with their Third
World policies.
Are we saying that it is okay to
compromise our morals for mon-
ey? We probably are, but let’s
try not to be that hypocritical.
I’m not saying we don’t have
the right to complain. I myself
signed the petition stating dis-
agreement, but I don’t think our
attitude reflected concern, but
rather harassment.
Also, perhaps it is easy for us
to criticize the policies of the
CIA, policies which they believe
are in our best interests, when
we live in our sheltered worlds at
St. Mary’s.

Dear Editor,
In reference to the article by
Sonia Garcia and Marisela Mar-

Dead and Buried?”: no, ideal-
ism is not extinct. If you want to
look for vanishing species, look
for campus faculty of the Ameri-

dynamic section of the popula-

Dear Editor,
I would like to comment upon
the opposition of some people to
the presence of the CIA inter-
viewers on campus.
It was stated that, because
the CIA has behaved less than
honorably in Central America, it
should not be allowed to recruit at
St. Mary’s, a Catholic university.
While I do not condone the
activity of the CIA in Central
America in all aspects, I do
disagree with the position which
would deny Catholic students
(and the Protestants) the oppor-
tunity for such an interview.
I would hope those ad-
vocates/guardians of “what-a-
Catholic-university-stands-for”
would follow through and protest
some other activities on this cam-
pus. A few examples:
1. Abolish the ROTC, as it is
an extension of our military, and
we all know what kinds of atroci-
ties can come from the army.

Abolish interview privileges
of corporations whose retail
establishments are open on Sun-
days. Certainly a Catholic univer-
sity would not want its graduates
working on Sunday.
If the CIA (and our national
government as a whole) is not
respectful of human rights, then
perhaps it needs more Catholic in-
fluence. While it may be abused,
the CIA performs certain
honorable tasks.
Finally, I think the attack on
the CIA interviewing is just
another example of the narrow
and selective vision of so-called
“activists” or “liberals.” As il-
lustrated above, there are other
“problems” right here on cam-
pus, even without the CIA.
If someone were to propose
that this university should not
train people for these occupa-
tions because there exist im-
moral persons in these profes-
sions, we would, very probably
dismiss the idea as ridiculous—
and well we should.
However, it seems that some
members of our university com-
munity have made just such a
proposal. The CIA was on
campus to recruit some of our
fellow students. Some members
of our community took it upon
themselves to protest this. They
cited the immoral actions of the
CIA in Central America as
justification for their protest. I
would like to make a few
observations about this situa-
tion.
As I see it, the protesters
failed to take into account the
fact that not all CIA agents are
involved in immoral actions in
Central America (or anywhere
else, for that matter). They
seemed to have condemned a
whole profession for the im-
moral, albeit authorized, actions
of a few.
Furthermore, since there do
seem to be persons in the CIA
willing to commit immoral act-
ions, then the answer to the
problem seems to be related to
the morality of those in the CIA.
I ask: what better place than St.
Mary’s University to recruit
morally trained young people
into a profession that is in such
dire need of morality?
Sincerely,
Adam Peterson

rather choppy fashion, I must

2. Abolish popular TV in the

As Rev. David Paul said at the
Feb. 12 SGA meeting, today’s
CIA policies are part of the
Reagan administration, “which
