SPECIAL TO THE CHEROKEEAN/HERALD
"And on this farm are: four ducks,
a guinea pig, a pot belly pig, four
cats, a goat, 11 chickens, two dogs
and two Bob White Quails," making
a grand total of 35 critters! Karen
said, "It's reached the point to where
the kids say, 'Can we have this?' I
say, 'Sure, what difference can one
more make?'"
Charles and Karen
Humphreys came to us
from Dickenson. They have
two children: Van, 20, who
works at Baxters and eight-
year-old Laci.
Karen worked with The
University of Texas Medi-
cal Branch in Galveston as
office manager for the de-
partment of infectious dis-
eases.
Charles was a mechanic
for a Nissan dealership and
for Chrysler warranty. He
plays drums and has a
fabulous stereo system.
Seems life has done a complete
turnabout for the Humphreys.
Karen is now substitute teaching
and working at the deli at
Brookshires. She is obsessed with
antiques, especially those with sen-
timental value. She likes Cajun food
and Cajun music.
When Jo Ed Anderson showed
them the Mae Gibson house, Karen
and Charles immediately knew this
was their dream home. The house
was built in 1863. They have made
amazing progress toward restoring
the home, and several projects are in
the making.
Laci, a fourth grader and a girl
scout, is quite busy with school and
church activities. She is also in-
volved in twirling, tumbling and
helping tend the animal kingdom.
Chances for a career as a vet are
looking quite favorable.

Will Deliver to Rusk/Alto Areas

The move to Rusk took several
weekends. Some of their friends who
had trucks joined the weekly cara-
van to transport their possessions.
"The final trip turned out to be a
dilly. I was tail-ending the caravan,
driving a truck and towing a jeep. I
had four cats, and one with kittens
in the cab with me.
"Rupert, the pig, was in the back
on a bale of hay. It was
midnight on a Friday.
We were going down I-
45 at 55 mph. These kids
pulled up next to me and
started waving. Finally
they rolled their window
down and yelled, "Did
you used to have a pig?"
I said, "Yeah!". I got out
of the truck and a man
stopped and we ran back
on the freeway and found
a very bloody Rupert.
There's lots more to
this story, but I guess
I'm out of space. You'll have to get
the rest of it from Karen. But Rupert
is still going strong and the
Humphreys are having a ball ad-
justing to life in East Texas.
It's such a delight, meeting our
new residents and hearing first hand
such different and interesting sto-
ries. I remember when we used to
take trips and I had a natural curios-
ity about what the people were like
in the homes we passed. Well, my
curiosity is finally being fulfilled.
What fun it is to share with them
such wonderful memories. Some of
their experiences are so heartwarm-
ing, and some so personal I don't
dare print. But I appreciate their
friendliness and trust by sharing
them with me. And I always feel that
I've been blessed as I leave their
home.
Don't forget to call me at (903)743-
5427 if you meet someone new in this
area.
Persons interested in giving to the
Old Palestine Cemetery Working
Fund in memory of a loved one may
