“I had been feeling so good that morning”... “I’ve never
been sick a day in my life!”... “I never had any warning at
all”... These are common reactions from people who are
often surprised to find themselves suffering a heart attack.
Heart attacks can happen without obvious warnings as the
symptoms are often quite subtle. But with knowledge of
symptoms, and analysis of your overall risk, you can often
prevent or lessen your possibility of a heart attack.
What is a heart attack? Technically, it is an obstruction
in one of the coronary arteries. Although the attack is sud-
den, it is actually the result of a slowly developing disease
called arteriosclerosis. Over time, the arteries become
clogged with the buildup of fatty deposits. Sometimes, a
blood clot or fatty deposits may block the flow of blood in
the narrowed artery. Without the blood, the heart does not
get the oxygen it needs, and a heart attack results.
The symptoms may be difficult to recognize. If you have
ANY of these symptoms, and they last two minutes or lon-
ger, ACT AT ONCE*:
* Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in
the center of your chest.
* Pain spreading to shoulders, neck and arms.
* Severe pain, dizziness, fainting, sweating, nausea or
shortness of breath
Not all these signals are always present. DO NOT HESI-
TATE if you suspect you might be having a heart attack.
What kind of factors increase your risk of heart attack?
* Heredity- heart attacks do have a tendency to be
inherited.
* Sex- men have a greater risk.
* Age- risk increases with age.
* Weight- overweight individuals put a greater burden on
the heart.
* Smoking
* Lack of exercise
* High blood cholesterol
* High blood pressure
* Stress
Obviously, some risk factors cannot be controlled. But
you do have the opportunity to achieve better heart health
through identifying your risk factors and working to control
and decrease them.
