experience, the state law is broad,
giving school districts the opportun-
ity to formulate and implement a
program to suit their needs and
budget.
“I think the legislation is impor-
tant because the flexibility will allow
the districts to cope within the
framework of their needs,” he said.
Because of the difficulty in diag-
nosing dyslexia and its many symp-
toms, Jones said there are two basic
misunderstandings about the handi-
cap, which can affect a child’s read-
ing, writing and math skills.
“Some people believe dyslexia is
a wastebasket term for any learning
disability, and that’s not true,” she
said. “On the other hand, some
people believe it is a rare problem
such as mirror reading, which is
also not true.”
Following the state timetable for
the program, the Allen Independent
School District began its training
cycle for first and second grade
teachers during summer training
sessions.
The method the AISD chose to
implement is known as the Exemp-
lary Center for Reading Instruction
(ECRI).
AISD curriculum Director David
Olson said the program’s principles
will be used as a supplement to the
recently adopted Basal Reading
Series and the district’s effective
teaching principles.
Olson said the district decided
not to jump into one specific prog-
ram, which can be expensive,

school districts to define and imple-

According to Bobbie Jones, a
family therapist and learning evalua- Q
tor with more than 25 years of
transfusion and did not imply moral
fault.
How should we respond to this
human tragedy? Firstly, we need to
get the true facts of how AIDS is
spread and not give in to unfounded
hysteria. Those families living by
biblical moral standards have little
to fear. Today’s blood supply is
safe. We should note that the scrip-
ture has much to say about our
sexuality, but distinguishes
between the sinner and his sin. (See
Genesis 1:27; Romans 1:18-32; 1
Corinthians 6:9-11.)
Secondly, Jesus set the example
in the way he treated the outcasts
of his own society, such as those
with a disease usually referred to as
leprosy. (See Matthew 26:6.)
Thirdly, Jesus’ examvle and New
Testament teaching require us to
willingly enter into the ministry of g
caring for those who are suffering "
(Hebrews 2:14-18).
Fourthly, we are all part of the
terminal generation. Our privilege
is to present the good news of the
gospel that Christ died as the
substitute for us sinners, and we
can experience its healing power by
faith and faith alone Gohn 3:16).
Because the victorious Christ rose
from the dead, we can give hope to
dying sinners that if they trust Him, _
they have an eternity to look
forward to in heaven. It is an infi-
nitely greater tragedy to live to age
100, then die and go to hell, than it
is to die young but spend eternity in
the very presence of God.
Finally, the healthy church is to
be a hospital for sick sinners and not
a museum for plastic saints who are
untouched by human frailty.

because the program might not be
the best for all dyslexic students. O
“We plan to continue gathering
information and identifying the
dyslexic students before we decide
what type of pull-out program we
need. At some point, we will iden-
tify the students with dyslexia, and
we might provide one teacher and a
more structured program,” he said.
Under the ECRI method, class-
room teachers learn to cope and
work with dyslexic children in the 4
normal classroom setting. W
“We’re aware that we have
dyslexic children in the district, and
we empathize with the parents’
struggle. We do everything we can
to arrange a child’s schedule to
allow for any private instruction
necessary,” he said.
Jones said she believes as the
districts implement their programs
and evaluate them, the better prog- a
rams will rise to the top. “
“Change does not occur when
people (school districts) feel
threatened. Parents, teachers,
counselors and the community need
to become allies in order to help the
children, because they are the ones
suffering the most,” she said.
If a parent suspects his child is
dyslexic, Jones said he should
request an evaluation either
through the school district orO
privately.
If a child is diagnosed as dyslexic,
and a parent can not afford a private
teacher, there are steps a parent
can take to ease the child’s frustra-
tion, Jones said.
First, the parents should explain
to the child that his disability does
not make him less intelligent than
his friends, only that he needs diffe-
rent tools to learn, Jones said. m

been significant contributions to the
poor, the suffering and the needy.
Recently I read about an informal
survey to indicate the degree of
acceptance people felt in their own
church. The question was asked, “If
you were to fall into sin on Saturday
night, would you want to be in
church the following Sunday morn-
ing?” Almost universally the answer
was no. If “sinners” do not feel
welcome in our churches, what
about social outcasts with “certain
diseases?”
In Luke 10, Jesus told the parable
of the despised Samaritan who
acted kindly toward an injured
Israelite and thus proved to be a
better neighbor than any of the reli-
gious leaders of Israel. Recent

mental processes. House Bill 2168 instructed the
ing to the child, letting the child
“write” reports or compositions on
“Just pray for Jesus to come into your heart, right now, wherever
you are, and thank Him for saving you.”
The above statement is not in the Bible. Many statements close to it,
rightly understood, are. For example Romans 10:9,10 says, “If thou
shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy
heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt by saved; for with
the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth con-
fession is made unto salvation.”
Is salvation easy? Do not believe it. It cost the life of the Son of
God, and it will cost your life if you are saved. You have got to put
one way of life to death and decide to make a new life. That is exactly
what making Christ “Lord” means. Peter preached, “Save yourselves
from this wicked generation” (Acts 2:40). Paul said, “Work out your
own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12). Many peo-
ple shaken up by something will come to a church service to find com-
fort. They want to confess their faults, and do. But, it is one thing to
admit fault, it is another thing, entirely, to correct faults. To feel guil-
ty is one thing, but to truly change is another.
No man who has truly repented of sin looks back longingly on the
old life he once lived. That old way must be repulsive to one commit-
ted to a new way. The good feeling that comes with confession does
not make a changed life. Fleeting feelings always give way to harsh
realities. That is why Peter said to those newborn Christians, “Save
yourselves from this wicked generation.” Jesus would never have
gone to the cross if He had acted on His feelings. He was terrified of
the cross, but true to His determination to do God’s will when He
prayed, “not my will but thine be done.”
Let us inspect our prayers. Are we asking God to help us do His
will, which we know is sometimes hard, or are we asking God to
forgive us for not trying? A changed life is a lifetime process, and in
the process God saves us. Salvation is never past tense, it is always
future. “If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). If
God forgives us this time, will He have to forgive us of the same sin in
a few hours? If He does, somebody has not repented.
