Alto Resolves Cheerleading Selection Process
with Compromise
Parents met June 18 with
Alto school board members
to address our views on the
unfairness of the revised set of
cheerleader guidelines which
consisted of (adding girls who
were within a one point range
before a break in scores.)
After several different dis-
cussions with board members
two requests were proposed
by parents.
The first proposed request
was to return the cheerleading
squad back to the original
set number of eight girls per
squad.
The second proposed request
was to add all the girls who
tried out for cheerleader and
can afford to pay the cheerlead-
ing expense be given the
opportunity to cheer.
The Board Members unani-
mously approved the second
proposed request, which con-
sisted of adding all the girls
who tried out to the squads.

Note: The Texas Education
Agency was contacted by Ms.
Buckingham, and Mr. Gor-
don's written response is
shown at left.
This correspondence is in reference to your letter requesting
information regarding the cheerleader selection process in
the Alto independent School District. You indicate that the
Cheerleader Committee and school administrators refuse to
allow you and other parents the opportunity to review their
individual daughter's score sheet.
In addition, you state the committee has decided to change the
board-approved rules for selection. You feel the major problem
has to do with a board member that has a child involved in the
cheerleader tryouts, and is also a member of the Cheerleader
Committee. Consequently, her child has an unfair advantage
as a result of her involvement.
There are several concerns that may violate state law and/or
local policy. We have not contacted the district 10 confirm your
allegations, however, score sheets used during the selection
process "are considered a student record," (Attorney General's
Open Record Decision #69).
Given that decision, parents have the right to view their
individual child's scores. You also indicate that the Cheerleader
Committee, that includes a board member, may have invalidated
the selection process by changing the previously board-approved
selection procedures.
It appears, by changing the results of the expert judges, local
policy may have been violated. The Committee cannot take
actions that have not been sanctioned by the board. Again, it
appears local policy may have been violated in this case. Board
members should not be involved after board approval of a policy
for that particular event, especially if the board member has a
vested interest in the outcome.
My recommendation would be to appeal the committee's
decision to the superintendent of schools and/or the Board of
Trustees of the district, for their review and disposition.
