Please leave a message at the tone
Whatever happened to good
manners? Thtí proper way
of doing things? I can recall
when my silver-haired school
teacher. Miss Keyes, taught
etiquette along with her Eng-
lish hterature class—an archaic
word seldom used these days.
Today in our fast moving soci-
ety, we find irate drivers on the
roadways, forcing their way in
hne, or rate-racing for parking
space.
How many times have you
gotten steamed up at a rude,
overbearing honker as the hght
clicked green? Or. are you the
one tooting your horn?
Arecent pet peeve came home
to me this week when someone
fumed, "I can't catch you at
home, you're always gone!"
"Why didn't you leave me a
message?'' I queried.
"Oh, I can't stand those
machines, they're too imper-
sonal!"
Immediately I ruminated
about my rights. An umbilical
cord is not tied to my telephone
as a beacon of command. Why
I have things to do, shopping,
meetings , sp ecial time s with my
friends and family.
Alack and alas with this
ingenious answer machine I'll
finally corner some time and get
some writing done, it'll enable
me to work on a schedule, I say
to myself with a grin. Can't
A note of comfort
Martha and Greg Neely lost
a member of their family a
few days ago. Mindy, their
beautiful httle poodle, had
to be put to sleep. Her infir-
mities had become so severe
that to do otherwise would
have been the ultimate cru-
elty. Finally their sadness
had to give way to concerns
for her suffering.
Mindy was the bright spot
they could always depend on.
Her love for them was honest ,
true and without condition.
Martha had been present
when Mindy was brought
into the world and knew
from that moment this httle
ball of fur would come to love
she and Greg.
As the years went by the
Neelys found Mindy not only
fit into their lap s, but in their
lives as well. She traveled
with them (and traveled and
traveled) and was always at
home as long as she could be
with her humans.
Knowing all this, it is easy
to understand why parting
with her has been difficult
for both of them. So, Greg
and Martha, I would like to
share something with you
that someone shared with
me long ago. I hope it warms
your heart as it did mine.
Dear Martha and Greg)
I explained to Saint Peter,
I'd rather stay here/Outside
the Pearly Gates/ I won't be
a nuisance/1 won't bark/I'll
be very patient and. wait/I'll
be chewing on a celestial
bone/No matter how long
you may be. I'd miss you so
much if I went in alone. It
wouldn't be Heaven for me.
Lave, Mindy

anyone see that I'm working
here? An interruption 10 or 12
times a clay leaves me drained
with no time for myself. "And
yes, I do hke talking with all
my friends. Lord," I whisper
in prayer. "Would you show
them writing is my job, and
that I will call them as soon
as I possibly can—just as soon
as I'm through?''
The high-tech society is here
to stay, like it or not. For some,
change is hard. That's why I
thank God for the answer
machine—my salvation for
time! My httle message about
being "up to my ears in putty
and paint'' hag worn out its
usefulness, they've heard it
before and impatient callers
won't hsten for the beep.
My day goes something hke
this: The phone is ringing...Oh
no! I have only one more line to
type. It's one of those organiza-
tions asking for usedhousehold
goods and clothing—donations.
Thank you my phone buddy!
I gave them something last
month.
Now, where was I, I muse,, .my
eyes racing down the screen
furiously, and maybe, just
maybe, the idea won't be lost!
As a writer I must protest and
defend my answer machine. I
adore her for her usefulness,
My "private secretary'' is on call
retrieving messages, working
all hours and is in overdrive
when I'm out of town. She never
shows up late nor asks for a
raise. No néedfor paid vacation
or maternity leave. Why, some-
times I can enjoy a leisurely
bath or go to the john!
When I came home after a
five-day sabbatical, it took 20
minutes to hear all 16 messages
from my courteous friend. (I
think they also must have
one of these.) Secretly I had
missed my phone, yet appre-
ciated silent moments away
from that demanding, jangling
contraption, the thing we can't
hve without. It certainly was
good to hear friendly voices
with pleas for callbacks.
For those who hung up and
left me with nothing but a chai
tone I feel sacl. Sorry we didn't
make contact- But can't you see
that you are literally hanging
up on me—and breaking com-
munication?
You see, my phone buddy is
an extension of me. Iboughtthe
Ma Bell special so I wouldn't
miss your call. And all I can
say is, "Please leave a mes-
sage when I can't answer your
call—you really are important
to me. I'm looking forward to
another interesting conversa-
tion with you—really!''
I'll be waiting for your call.

A walk through the Dark Ages
A few weeks ago I wrote a
letter to the editor about the
BDJ's robbery but this time
I want to say something dif-
ferent. I want to talk about a
passage in the Bible concern-
ing the two witnesses, butwho
are they?
Well, the two witnesses are
not human beings, but the are
the spirit and the word. As we
know by history, there was a
period of time called the Dark
Ages. This period in time was
when these two witnesses
were dead. No one carecl about
them or wanted anything to clo
with them. But one clay Martin
Luther was siting at his home
whenhiseyeswere opened. He
began asking himself, "Why do
Ibelieve the things I clo?" As we
knowintheDarkAges, Catho-
lic priests were the only ones
allowed to read the Bible.
Martin Luther, who was
a Cathohc priest, began to
look in the Bible for answers.
He then realized that all he
believed clown through the
years was false.
The time following the Dark
Ages was the Great Awaken-
ing, which was aperiocloftime
where most powerful men of
Gocl, very similar to Martin
Luther, started to bring the
two witnesse s alive again. And
they are alive to this clay, and
they are doing a mighty work
in this country.
As we know, Sept. 11, 2001,
was a horrific clay. But we
were able to survive—at least
we Christians were. Why?
Because we had the spirit and
the Word. Or the two witnesses
burning in our hearts.
