and from there on up we simply put
on more motor geared pinions driving
the same rack or gear, and we have
standard racks handling 2,000,000 lb.
loads on the offshore platforms. And,
of course, we have the appropriate
generators and engines to go with
these motors. I have said and still say
that the curse of the construction ma-
chine building industry is that there
are so many different kinds of ma-
chines required that you don't get
enough of any one kind to get mass
production. They are all glorified job
shops. I believe we have the answer
to this problem. We build each of
these standard motors by the thous-Ill-

ands-each gear reduction box is
built by the thousands with stock
gears to give the right ratio. Then
you can order a digger in three sizes
or a transporter or a rear dump truck
with either diesel or trolley power,
or a blade grader, a revolving crane,
log stacker, sheepsfoot roller, logging
arch, trench hoe, tree crusher or a
bulldozer and many others. They all
could have the same wheels, tires,
motors and gear boxes. In other
words, practically all the replaceable
or wearing parts could be the same.
Think how that would cut down the
stock of parts and gears to be. car-
ried on hand in case of emergency
But not only that ---think how that
cuts the cost of manufacturing and
the cost of spare parts too. Yes, we
are standardizing on 2-wheel axle
beams with a slight difference be-
