A few weeks ago I wrote about my
big A-5 Dozer Bull, the daddy of
dozers, weighing close to 350,000 lbs.
Lots of names have been suggested,
but I think I'll still just call it the
Bull. However, my old friend, Mar-
shall Taylor, sent in a name that I
think I'll use on my new machine I
want to talk about today. It's the
Bobcat (my name is Bob.) It's an A-5
same as the Bull with more horses,
but only weighing 150,000 instead of
350,000 which means a pay load of
100 tons of ore or overburden, with a
rear dump body, or a side dump body
or a flat deck for logs. It has three
420 horsepower engines, or I can put
on four of them if you want to climb
steep hills fast. I'm sticking to my
single powered wheel to steer with.
It may look a little odd, but there is
a lot of reasoning- behind it, and theReturn Old Address As It Appears Above

performance is there. You get lighter
weight and therefore, bigger pay load
per tire with less cost per ton and
less maintenance, because you only
have five tires instead of six to carry
practically the same load.
There are two main reasons for
this. First, with two wheels steering,
it takes a lot heavier steering gear
because when you turn, one wheel
has to go faster than the other and
you are practically sliding them
around, and if you want quick man-
euverability, you'll have to put on
just about four times the size steering
motor with four times as heavy gears. With R. G. LeTourneau

This is not just a theory. I tried it
and that's what it takes. Some that
adopted my Tournapull system have
gone back to two small idle wheels
in front because they steer so easily,
and, of course, when they come
around, they pull the big drivers
around. But the trouble is you have
to put enough weight on those little
