Most everyone would like to have
a better memory. Life would be eas-
ier, and even more exciting, if we
could remember people we have met,
things we have heard, and even what
we have to do. Students need class
schedules, teachers n e e d record
books, businessmen need desk cal-
endars and we all need daily re-
minders at home to keep us on
schedule.
N o t everything is important
enough to remember, but some things
are far too important for us to for-
get. As Christians we can so easily
pray, promising the Lord that we will
give Him the praise when the answer
comes, only to forget that promise
almost immediately.
Sooner or later, crises of various

we find the Lord to be our strength,
our comfort and our guide. At the
time we are sure that we will ever be
grateful to Him for bringing us
through. But all too soon we forget.
When Joshua led Israel across the
Jordan River into the promised land,
God instructed him to have one man
from each tribe take a stone from the
very spot in the midst of the River
Jordan where the priests stood firm
on dry land while the people passed
over. The twelve stones were carried
to the Gilgal side and there Joshua
set them up as a memorial to the
mercy of God. (Joshua Chapter 4)
The reason was clear. They were
never to forget the miracle of God
in their hour of crisis. They could al-
ways be encouraged in every situa-
tion of life by remembering how God
had intervened in a time of distress
and then were commanded to give
their testimony to their children
when they would see those stones
and ask: "What mean these stones?"
While we today would not employ
the same method to remind us of the
mercies of God, we need to do what-
ever is necessary, for us, to always
remember God's faithfulness, and to
share our experiences of victory with
others. James Addison in a hymn has
expressed it in this way.
When all Thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view,
I'm lost in wonder, love, and praise.
Unnumbered comforts to my soul,
Thy tender care bestowed,
Before my infant heart conceived
From whom those comforts flowed.Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart
That tastes those gifts with joy.
Through all eternity to Thee
A grateful song I'll raise;
But oh, eternity's too short
To utter all Thy praise!
