FEAR DISPELLED BY CONFIDENCE
Mr. R. G. LeTourneau was once
asked, "How do you account for
people not accomplishing more in
life?" His response was instant and
brief: "Fear."
It is difficult to overcome fear. It
prevents otherwise able people, from
clearing hurdles or realizing greater
achievements. Here at LeTourneau
something exciting has happened. It
occurred in the summer program
called GIANT STEP. Excitement was
evident in the statements made by
participating students. Young people
who were formerly afraid, doubtful,
or unmotivated, said, "NOW I KNOW
THAT I CAN DO IT."
It isn't merely an emotional testi-
mony to a new outlook in life. The
exciting achievements are measur-
able. The evidence was not only on
the lips of those who succeeded, but
standardized tests such as the Cali-
fornia Test of Advanced Math and
the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, to
name only two, provide concrete evi-
dence.
So, when a GIANT STEP student
says, "NOW I KNOW THAT I CAN
DO IT," the teachers can confirm this
new found optimism by reporting
that post-test scores in reasoning areup, fundamentals of mathematics are
up, vocabulary is up, comprehension
is up, and the reading rate is more
than doubled.
Last summer young people, rang-
ing in age from 16 to 25, coming from
nine states and two foreign countries,
experienced again that GIANT STEP,
which is in its fifth year, is a success-
ful and unique educational program
that is demonstrating consistent and
remarkable improvement in all areas
covered.
In GIANT STEP, each student
moves developmentally at his own
pace, setting personal goals and em-
phasizing instruction in vocational
studies, study skills, physical educa-
tion, spiritual maturity and motiva-
tion.
Are you a fearful high school sen-
ior? We have found, in working with
young people, that GIANT STEP can
provide special help in overcoming
the obstacle of fear. You will be
better prepared for college.
We are excited when we hear a
GIANT STEP student say, "I have
learned that I CAN DO IT." We are
doubly excited when the test scores
give irrefutable evidence that the
personal achievements of these young
people have, in truth, taken a GIANT
STEP forward.p
