MESSAGES
Rebuilding The Tower Of Babel
The government of Iraqi is con-
sidering reconstruction of part of the
ruins of Babylon in a comprehensive
program expected to cost more than
$26 million!
They are hoping to erect another
tower of Babel on the plain that they
might have something spectacular for
an international tourist attraction.
The Biblical tower of Babel (Gene-
sis 11) was built about 4000 B.C. by
the descendants of Noah in defiance
of God and with the objective of mak-
ing a name for themselves that their
renown might be spread abroad in
the earth! The Lordi had told them to
multiply and "replenish the earth."
But they said: "No - we'll build a
city here and a tower 'lest we be
scattered abroad upon the face of the
earth.'"
The word Babel means "confus-
ion"! Whenever God's commands are
disregarded, only confusion can re-
sult! The Lord confounded their lan-
guages, so that they could not under-
stand each other and had to separate!
It is interesting to follow through
history the migrations of Noah's pos-
terity into Europe and Asia-e.g. the
descendants of Gomer into Germany
and others further north into what is
now Russia-Tubal and Meshech to
Tobolsk and Moscow (Genesis 10:2).
Also see Ezekiel 38 and 39 relating to
future prophecies concerning many
of these people who are continuing
in defiance of God.
The city of Babylon did rise into
great prominence about 1830 B.C.
and reached its great height of glory
when Nebuchadnezzar reigned about
600 B.C. He boasted: "Is not this
great Babylon that I have built for
the royal dwelling place by the might
of my power, and for the honor of my
majesty?"
However, when the Lord dealt with
him, he changed his tune and said:
"I praised and honored Him that
liveth forever, whose dominion is an
everlasting dominion and His king-dom is from generation to generation
and He doeth according to His
will in the army of heaven, and
among the inhabitants of earth: and
none can stay His hand, or say to
Him, What doest thou? . . . and
those that walk in pride He is able
to abase." Read the whole story in
Daniel 4.
After his reign, the Babylonian
Empire declined rapidly - and today
it is desert! The Iraqi government
may build some tourist attractions,
but the city can never attain to its
former glory.
Anything contrary to God's design
brings only confusion! And because
man ignores God so often and seeks
to glorify himself, we see "confusion"
on every hand today.
Instead of self exaltation, why not
follow God's way of placing faith in
the One whom God hath exalted and
seek His guidance. Then, instead of
confusion, will come peace!
Philippians 2:9-11: "God hath high-
ly exalted Him, (the Lord Jesus) and
given Him a name which is above
every name: That at the name of
Jesus every knee should bow . . .
and that every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory
of God the Father."
"God resisteth the proud, and giv-
eth grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5).
DEMONOLOGY TODAY?
There seems to be an extreme in-
clination these days toward the oc-
cult and the mysterious! People are
asking: "Is there a God?" "Do I have
a soul and spirit that will live on
after death?" "Are there such things
as demons?" Popular screenplays are
exciting great interest concerning
demonology. Only in the Bible can
true and satisfactory answers be
found!
Yes, there are demons; and Satan,
the Devil, is the master mind behind
them all. He is called: "the prince of
the power of the air, the spirit that
now worketh in the children of dis-
obedience" (Ephesians 2:2). He has
working with him many principali-
ties and powers and rulers of dark-
ness and wicked spirits (Ephesians
6:12).
When the Lord Jesus was here up-on earth, Satan
tempted Him forty
days and forty
nights. The Lord Je-
sus came out com-
plete victor by quot-
ing the Word of God
from the Old Testa-
ment - until Satan
went away and left
Him!The demons in the '
Lord's day recogniz- ,
ed His authority: "I a
know Thee who Thou a.
art, the Holy One of
God" (Mark 1:24). o
And again: "Thou art
Christ, the Son of k
God" (Luke 4:41). 2
Truly "the devils be- 0
lieve and tremble" o
(James 2:19). We
cannot ignore their
power and influence, but we can re-
joice in the great power of the Lord
Jesus Christ. He came that He might
destroy the works of the Devil (He-
brews 2:14).
Satan with his emissaries is the
thief described in John 10:10, who
seeks "to steal and to kill, and to de-
stroy." But how wonderful that in
that same verse the Lord Jesus says:
"I am come that they might have life,
and that they might have it more
abundantly!"
If humans yield themselves to the
power of Satan, he or his demons
may enter them - as in the case of
Judas.
Demons may even answer ques-
tions and reveal partial truths by the
power of the evil one. But if we yield
ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for our sins, we are sealed
with the Holy Spirit. In His power
we may heed the exhortation of I
Peter 5:8, "Be sober, be vigilant, be-
cause your adversary the devil, as a
roaring lion walketh about seeking
whom he may devour." We are safe
if we will but "Submit yourselves
therefore to God. Resist the devil,
and he will flee from you" (James
4:7).'5
